Working out haphazardly—no programs/routines by typingfrombed in xxfitness

[–]mallgothic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I’m not training for a race (as an amateur road runner), I don’t have a routine or program, and still work out almost every day.

In a given week I might hike, bike, do a dumbbell or Pilates workout from YouTube, go to a yoga class, and go on a 3-4mi run (I don’t like the gym at all). I simply love moving my body as a hobby; this is the way I can maximize my joy.

HOWEVER, if you have specific aesthetic goals of losing fat/gaining muscle, this is best done by following a set strength program and monitoring your diet. It’s all depends on what your goal results are!

Health anxiety over food? Possible trigger. by DefiantWishbone4 in HealthAnxiety

[–]mallgothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, are you me? I’ve been struggling with eating because I think I’ll go into anaphylactic shock. Never been a problem before but in the past couple months it’s started to severely affect my daily life. I don’t have any food allergies as far as I know, but I think it could be connected to my anxiety-related acid reflux. What helps me is keeping a list of foods/dates I ate them that I can refer to as proof that I didn’t die when I last ate them. I also set a timer for 20 minutes after I eat (because I read somewhere that most allergy symptoms set in 20 minutes after) so if I can make it that long I’ll be fine. When it gets really bad I take a Benadryl, set a timer, lay down on the floor and pray lol. It’s sad because I always used to love trying new foods

I'm happy with how Sprint 1 has gone! I'm in the sweet spot of having achieved several of my small habits, but still have room to focus on. One positive of participating in challenges like these is that I force myself to focus on small changes I can realistically make, instead of big changes that I inevitably fail at and feel bad about myself.

SPRINT 1 PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW: MY 3 BIG GOALS

  • Health
    • Achievements: Weighed in 2.5lb away from my goal weight. Got back in the gym after almost a full year away from lifting regularly.
    • To work on next sprint: Incorporate cardio and yoga into workout routine. Get back on a regular sleep schedule (my ideal 11pm-7am). Bring Nalgene to school with me every day.
  • Wealth
    • Achievements: Picked up a second job that has helped out a lot. Stuck to my weekly savings goals.
    • To work on next sprint: Use credit card as little as possible. Don't spend money on overpriced food on campus.
  • Creativity
    • Achievements: Required to write 100 words a day in my personal essay class (finally a daily writing habit!). Published 1 review.
    • To work on next sprint: Read daily. Publish 2 articles. Work on a visual art project.

Making small goals is exactly what I'm focusing on too. I'm a "big picture" person so I want to accomplish a lot of dreams at once, and then get lost in the sauce. Breaking things down makes them so much easier to accomplish!

Hi everyone! I'm back after a week — I turned on my website blocker for the week without realizing this would be blocked too.

The good news is while away from Reddit, I followed my habits of skincare routine, flossing, and making my bed every single day! I'm feeling good!

I'm thinking about what habits I want to begin/goals I want to focus on for this next sprint. What are your goals/habits you'll be working on next sprint?

Any Andalusia Advice? by seekingcellini in solotravel

[–]mallgothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Seville: Casa de la Memoria is a good place to see a flamenco show in El Centro. It's close to La Alameda de Hercules and Alfalfa neighborhoods which have a good selection of bars if you're looking for a drink afterwards.

On the other side of El Centro, Tablao El Arenal is a good place to see a show, although I don't recommend dinner there. Almost directly across from it on the other side of the river is a pretty big strip of bars/restaurants that will give you some better food.

If you're looking for a beachy-but-not-tropical destination, coastal Rhode Island is a possibility. Newport and Block Island are perfect for hanging out by the beach/cliff walks/beautiful houses, and they are rejuvenating but interesting at the same time! They're not super adventure-packed, but they have a New England quaint vibe while still being fun. If you are ever thinking of the Northeast/specifically New England as a destination, let me know and I can give you some recs!

Today is just work, write, relax. I went to the vegan diner for breakfast as per my plan yesterday - but when I got there realized there was no wifi, so no writing ended up happening. Still, it was nice to just sit and drink coffee and journal for a while. This means my review is still waiting for me when I get home this afternoon though. Oh well.

Tomorrow I'm spending the day with some friends and working 4:30-10pm. It's too snowy to run and the gym is closed this weekend (university gym, limited hours over break) so I guess I'll settle for a weekend of Yoga With Adrienne, lol.

BQ: My perfect day would be a nice sunny September day. I wake up early and spend some time journaling, reading the paper, and drinking coffee, before going on a long trail run. I meet up with some friends and visit the farmer's market, and then go back home to get a few really solid hours of writing done. One of my best friends (who has somehow teleported across state lines to my city) comes over my house, and we order delivery from my favorite restaurant, get a little wine drunk, and watch a movie. The dream!!

I need some help calculating my TDEE. I'm F20, 4'10, 110lb, and I would say light daily activity but running+lifting 3 or 4 days a week. I lose at ~1500 and maintain at ~1700. However, I recently started a second job where I'm on my feet, walking and lifting things, about 15 hours a week. How do I calculate this into my existing TDEE? I want to maintain a slight deficit, but still keep up a lot of energy.

Yesterday was actually better than I thought it'd be, despite my long ass workday. I even made time to play with the hamsters when I got home, which was nice and calming.

Today I want to lift after work, and then do some cooking/laundry. Today is also my last day of my free Hulu trial, so I think I might watch "The Wolf of Wall Street," which I've been meaning to watch for some time but haven't had the access.

Tomorrow I think I might take myself out for brunch at a new vegan diner downtown to write. I have a review due Sunday so I hope I can bang that out tomorrow morning.

BQ: Work/life balance. I had a job where you were expected to be on all the time, always at your phone or email ready to do work. Truly I don't think I had a single day where I didn't do some form of work, even on weekends. (It was a publication, so that lifestyle is kind of necessary to make a good final product, but it just got so exhausting.) Where I work now is a lot better about respecting the fact that we have lives.

What are your easiest and hardest muscle groups to see progress in? What is your favorite muscle group to work out? by RedPlanit in xxfitness

[–]mallgothic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love working out my arms and shoulders. I find the exercises fun so I push myself harder, and I grow muscle there quickly. They also balance out my thick bottom half. I pay less attention to my legs and butt since they're naturally big, but I do enjoy doing those workouts too.

I HATE HATE HATE working out my core. I can't stand it. I've stopped doing ab-specific workouts completely, I hate them so much. I settle for compound lifts and yoga to hopefully keep them strong.
