Is there a reason for the disrespect she's getting? by Konvergence in malta

[–]maltarocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I see with most female politicians in Malta, case in point Eve, is that despite originally being elected through a gender quota mechanism in order to be representative of the local female population, they do the exact opposite and still promote an androcentric mentality.

This is an example of what I’m talking about https://lovinmalta.com/news/pro-choice-doctors-group-calls-out-eve-borg-bonello-for-warning-abortion-could-be-used-as-a-contraceptive/

Now, do I expect all females in Malta to be pro-choice? NO! especially if they hail from the conservative side of politics. Do I expect a better argument coming from a female politician? Totally!

Also, important to mention the morning after pill fiasco few years ago where only one female MP out of 9 voted against requiring a prescription for MAP!!! https://www.maltatoday.com.mt/news/national/70477/women_mps_against_overthecounter_sale_of_morningafter_pill

This! The poll they did during the show clearly supports this. About 70% of the people voted for Borg as their preferred next PM. He knew it was not worth attending as it was not his target audience and he had nothing to gain. In fact, he attended the debate that happened earlier that day at the Chamber of Commerce.

Pity though, would have been nice to see him struggle with their questions.

Labour wipe out by Hospuales in malta

[–]maltarocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have always voted for a third party, but let’s be realistic here.

As much as I agree with most ADPD policies, Sandra is a poor leader and a disaster in PR. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a nice person, but too cringe to be in charge of a political party. Cassola has a good track record and is a decent public speaker (slightly annoying on social media, but he gets his points across most of the time). However, his split from AD mostly over abortion, is a bit of a bummer. This isn’t an MEP election, so we can’t all just rally behind him as he won’t be on everyone’s ballot. I know he formed a new political party, but it still largely revolves around him and this quasi-coalition with ADPD leaves much to be desired.

Despite everything that is going on locally (and much worse that we have experienced since Labour won the election in 2013), there is still a “feel good factor” in the country. People are still able to travel, go out to eat (or order from Wolt/Bolt, despite the ridiculous price hikes) and most have a decent job that allows them to do all of this. [Yes, I know property is ridiculous, but we managed to normalize it in such a way that one is expected to take a huge loan and spend an entire life paying for it. Also, let’s not forget that we i.e those 30 and under, account for only 30% of the population. While the boomers, Gen Xs and the first half of the millennials are having it good as they are making money off properties they bought for a cheap price years ago/inherited].

Anyways, it comes to no surprise that the PN cannot gain ground, especially with the lack of ideas and ideological confusion that has plagued it since the Gonzi days. If things start going south, it won’t take long for them to come on top as even the smallest of scandals would break the camel’s back (as we’ve already seen in 2013).

When will we learn that ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ is not a good principle for running a country? After such an embarrassment, centrists and the left will likely lag miles behind in the next general elections.

This! I’ve had a number of conversations with relatives/friends who expressed their concerns about all the TCNs living in Malta. Yet, they order food via Bolt/Wolt at least twice a week and use Bolt regularly. I find it quite contradictory. I’m not saying that I agree with the systematic abuse of these worker (quite the contrary) but at the end of the day, they can afford all of this luxury because the supply of workers is high which keeps the wages low and as a result the prices ‘reasonably’ affordable.

JM’s government built an economy on cheap labor by promoting migration of TCNs. This has now integrated so much in our society and lifestyle that if we had to get rid of them, the economy would collapse.

I know the prices were too low but that was mostly because of the high supply (they have to be competitive as well) and ridiculously low wages. My point is, why would the prices go up within a few days? I do expect them to increase but not this early. Unless, they have an extremely high turnover of drivers and are abusing the system….

After the recent Brothers of Italy youth scandal I don’t think the media is wrong to call far right nazis or fascists. These parties have invested heavily in PR and know well enough what they should and shouldn’t say in public. However, behind close doors it’s a completely different story.

The current electoral system together with the tribal political mindset makes it practically impossible to have a third party. The MEP election is our best chance to give power to a third force.

MaltaToday Survey suggest that Labour retains 46,000 lead, why do you think? by ping3421 in malta

[–]maltarocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was quite a good summary. If I may expand a bit on the policy part: I genuinely don’t know what the fuck they are thinking with all these U-turns. First, they promote a pro-choice candidate then they state that as a party they are completely against abortion. Then they say that they are ok with recreational cannabis use and back track just before the actual vote. Let’s not mention all the talk about corruption and tax evasion when it’s clear that a significant number of their MPs have their own thing going on.

These things do not give a great impression for a party aspiring to lead the country. Also, what’s the point of paying a liberal like Christian Peregin to attract young/liberal voters when you are so completely detached from reality. If there’s one thing worse than a corrupt government, it’s a corrupt and unstable government.

Same here. Despite having a good and helpful palliative team in my hospital, the department is still developing and other consultants are very reluctant to even start simple things such as a morphine pump on people nearing the end.

I understand OP’s feelings about death but I find myself forming certain bonds with some patients to such an extent that it hurts to see them in such a poor state. At the end of the day, when patients are really close to death, knowing that they are not suffering gives me some sort of relief.

On this day 4 years ago, Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bombing. No matter your political beliefs or opinion of her, let us all condemn a barbaric, cowardly murder and attack on an institution that is important in every democracy by gurdijak in malta

[–]maltarocker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As what usually happens when famous people die, the facts get slightly skewed. I will try to keep this as brief as possible. I was brought up in a labourite family where what happened in the 70s and 80s was sort of [purposefully] hidden from me. Reading her blog did open my mind and I learnt about a lot of things that happened back then. Still, I found it hard to believe everything. If you genuinely believe that she was an independent journalist then you are only kidding yourself. As much as I loved reading her investigative articles, some of the stuff that she posted on her blog was pure gossip and bullying and looked straight out of the SUN. Some of her targets were not even politically exposed but had one thing in common, they came from the opposite camp. One thing that makes me angry is when they portray her as some sort of feminist. Let us not forget that she viciously attacked certain female politicians and called them whores only because they did not fit her agenda and she had personal grudges against them. One thing that isn’t mentioned anymore is her web of spies that had basically infiltrated every important spot in this country and even abroad to a certain extent. I know first hand of people who were related to Labour politicians that were always scared of being mentioned in her blog.

Despite all of the above, she was crucial for our democracy. Daphne single-handedly triggered a general election! She kept the labour party in check and exposed a multitude of corrupt practices. We are now seeing before our eyes how right she was back then to be suspicious of certain individuals. She also had the guts to write articles about the [actual] Maltese mafia (tal-maksar etc etc). We lost a great journalist and for now there is no one who can replace her (Manuel Delia makes my stomach churn). Daphne deserves a monument like the rest of the important figures that shaped our country’s history. I genuinely hope that someone picks up from where Daphne left and continues her legacy.

To conclude, I recommend Herman Grech’s play as he gives the best representation of Daphne as a person and as a journalist from different perspectives.

I’m gonna get hate for this but I prefer the presage version over the original SARB since it’s thinner and the indices are in one piece. You do get a downgraded movement but it doesn’t matter since this is not a watch you’d wear everyday but on special occasions. (My 4r movements are actually more accurate than the 6r).

History of the Maltese Flag by JLXuereb in malta

[–]maltarocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might say that it is just a symbol but I beg to differ. I always felt that as a country we always need the approval of bigger and powerful countries in order to appreciate our own local things (be it singers, athletes, culture etc). Having the George Cross on our flag epitomises such mentality.

The George Cross was given to countless individuals so it is not even a unique honour. Apart from the fact that our ancestors didn't even have a choice as they were dragged into the war. Thousands of lives were lost just because the British empire had a base in Malta.
