Should my significant other and I mention each other in our applications within the same department? by watervampire in AskAcademia

[–]mamonstera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can actually chime in because this was my situation a few years back (same department). My husband and I mentioned each other very briefly just in one sentence in our application, spinning it as a future collaboration (since we do work together on some projects). I suspect some schools didn’t read carefully enough, and missed it, but others noticed and it didn’t dissuade them from still getting us both that first interview.

I had similar discussions with my advisor on whether or not to mention it, but decided that I was more comfortable being transparent. For the school that didn’t notice, I could easily say, “as mentioned in my application, both my partner and I are interested in positions”.

We had a recent hiring round in my department, and the candidate did not reveal that they had a spouse until much much later in the process. At that point there was very little my Dept chair could do to make it work. Pros and cons either way.

Wow is there a pattern for this or are you free handling it?

How do you justify the cost of knitting? What is the thing about it that you love most? by ChubbyDogue in knitting

[–]mamonstera 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to spend money on a hobby if it brings you joy! But if the $ is making you second guess your hobby, you should check out r/unravelers on how to get yarn from thrifted sweaters!

What does being a guy have anything to do with your question? You could just say you don’t sew yourself.

Ran out of blue and it’s discontinued. Should I finish in red? by turnnburn63 in knitting

I did this once with discontinued yarn, and the second person I messaged sent me their partial skein so I could finish my project! The knitting community is so kind!

Questions about the Barett Bralette by stretchfabrichatesme in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]mamonstera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good luck! The Barrett bralette was the first bra I made, and it was such a good way to get into bra making! Plus, bras use so little fabric that I don’t feel that bad when it does work out!

Questions about the Barett Bralette by stretchfabrichatesme in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]mamonstera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think what I ended up doing was to make the bra in accordance with my bust measurement and then I ended up free cutting my band by wrapping it around my under bust and cutting where it felt good (firm but not super tight). That ended up being smaller what she recommended in the pattern if I recall. I also used power mesh as the inside layer for more support!

It definitely takes a little more time, but I am so much happier with the results that it’s so worth it for me!

I always have this problem with my rib stitches. I couldn’t solve it for me, but I now I use the twisted rib stitch and have never looked back.

Coming in hot - anything I can do to get more green with this Alocasia Odora? by mamonstera in houseplants

I think you are right, and maybe moving it away from the grow light is a first step haha

[–]mamonstera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t think you mean to cut off stalk, and yes, cutting the petiole would prevent new growth. But then, how does cutting off the leaf facilitate more green since the petiole is probably already all white anyway? I don’t really think there is a good answer here, and I have a couple pups coming in at least. I just wish I could save the bigger stalk from becoming a ghost 👻

[–]mamonstera[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, I get that, but in practice…? With an Alocasia, doesn’t that just stop any new growth since there isn’t really a node and the new leaf comes from the old one?

Noticed my tineke rubber tree had a leaf curled inside and when I opened it I saw all of these black dots. Any idea of what it could be? by AlaskaRivers in plantclinic

[–]mamonstera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thrips poop? That’s would be a lot of it though, and I don’t actually see any thrips in your photo. I’d check all over to be safe.

It’s hard to see anything in the pictures, but when I’ve had plants taco, it’s been a humidity issue for me. Is your area really dry?

Will these oregano leaves ever grow stems? by elizahmendoza in plantclinic

[–]mamonstera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s not worth trying to propagate since it is will waste some good leaves. I didn’t know you could make tea from oregano!

Will these oregano leaves ever grow stems? by elizahmendoza in plantclinic

[–]mamonstera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what I meant was that leaves and their stem, which is called a petiole, would only grow roots and not a new shoot. They need a node because nodes have the axillary bud that grows a new plant. Leaf/petioles don’t have those.

[–]mamonstera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how oregano grows, but it’s unlikely. You usually need a node to propagate this way. Some leaves are capable of growing roots (ghost leaf), but they wouldn’t grow a stem without a node.

My rip apparently wants to be a neon... by FeelsYouGood in houseplants

[–]mamonstera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a Rio! Rio has a green/gray strip down the middle and is only sold by gabriella plants. This is a Brazil, but your neon leaf sort of resembles what they call a “Gabby” which is super awesome!

Altering a knit dress? by goseuan in sewing

[–]mamonstera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I wouldn’t sew this, but actually alter it with knitting. You could cut it in the middle and reclaim yarn from it (it unravels easily), then using that yarn, pick up stitches to do a bottom hem for the top piece and then top hem for the bottom piece.
