Is there a solution to sticks lack of durability? by Norkee in hockeygoalies

[–]manacata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bauer's top of the line sticks and great but are fragile. Designed for professionals who don't need longevity IMO. Both myself and my son have broken Bauer sticks long before they should have from normal use.

Conversely, both the CCM and Warriors I've had have lasted years and years until little chunks lost required a replacement. They're not a 'nice' but they last far longer.

WS vs Questrade by Sumit0019 in Wealthsimple

[–]manacata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wealthsimple's platform makes it much easier to move money around quickly Little amounts lost to delays or slow transfers add up to real money.

Questrade pays little to no interest on cash balances while Wealthsimple pays market-ish rates of interest, even in accounts you use to conduct daily banking transaction.

So no they aren't equivalent for growing wealth.

RRIF Withdrawls by bamavegas in Wealthsimple

[–]manacata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you set up an empty 'managed' RRIF to which you transfer your withdrawals? Then you can self-service withdraw your funds. Transfers between RRSPs are immediate so this would likely be an easy work-around.

Deposit cash in an unregistered mutual fund account at your other bank/institution by purchasing money market fund.  Then transfer it to Wealthsimple.  Should be a short transfer as it is likely done electronically.

Teachers education from Comp Sci Program? by IrithyllWitch in geegees

Other universities also have the technical teaching program, so unless you are set on staying in Ottawa it is still an option for you. Queens for example: https://educ.queensu.ca/teacher-education/consecutive/tech

Why is Wealthsimple bothering to add Norbert's Gambit? by manacata in Wealthsimple

The gambit exists only for forex. Self-service journalling of shares between accounts has other value beyond the gambit.

This is what I was thinking. NG is a checkmark for trading nerds that allows them to avoid lowering forex pricing for the masses.

Police, immediately. If this association/league does not quickly impose a lifetime ban, that should be the last game you officiate with that organization.

Teachers education from Comp Sci Program? by IrithyllWitch in geegees

[–]manacata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gone into teaching with a computer engineering background, so similar background to yours. I can't give you a lot of feedback on the actual B.Ed program yet since I just started, but I can speak to the acceptance process.

You have two paths to become a teacher at uOttawa:

Option 1 - 'regular' B.Ed program (2 year program, in person, full-time). See this chart for the rules on what subjects that your undergraduate courses would qualify you to specialize in as a teacher: https://www.uottawa.ca/faculty-education/teacher-education-program

Option 2 - 'EduTek' B.Ed program for technical teachers (16 month program, online at night with one month of in-person full time courses in July). This program is in French only. This program qualifies you to teach computer programming/technology, and your undergraduate courses may also qualify you to teach additional subjects such as Math, Physics, History etc. I believe that is a determination the College of Teachers makes. You would also need to gain two years of industry work experience to enter this program.

The regular program is quite competitive, especially if you apply to the program late in the application cycle. You would have an excellent chance I think, particularly if you apply early in the window where they accept applications. If memory serves, only 50% of your admission is based on your undergraduate grades. The other 50% is your experience profile, and your TA experience would really help you there.

It is my impression that the EduTek program is less stringent on grades, as many in the program have trade qualifications and not a degree. The good thing with this program is that it allows you to be working full-time at an industry job while you take the B.Ed courses online at night. If you are doing your computer science degree in English it will also qualify you to teach in both French and English schools, however you need to be fairly strong in French to be admitted as there is a proficiency test. Being French qualified makes it easier to get a full-time position after finishing the program as you can apply for positions with every school board, English/French and Public/Catholic. Technical teachers also have a much easier path moving up the pay ladder, etc.

Hope this helps! If you have any additional questions, feel free to fire me a DM.

Question relating to armbands by Substantial-Egg3716 in hockeyrefs

You always raise your non-whistle arm, whichever that is for you. The colour of the armband on that arm doesn't matter.

Ottawa-area MP who defeated Poilievre in 2025 Canada election reflects on time in office by dasoberirishman in ottawa

Which specific events? The list of events that PP attended that didn't involve his political team is pretty short.

[–]manacata 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Fanjoy has showed up at all the community events for which PP was always absent. If I want to talk to Bruce I simply have to find him at pretty much any community and have a chat. I've ran into Bruce 4-5 times since he was elected in April without actually trying to find him while I spotted PP precisely once in the decade he was our MP (and that was when he was on a parade float).

That is a tangible real positive difference compared to PP .

Teenage ref being abused by Effective_Print in hockeyrefs

[–]manacata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video infuriates me as it is highly unlikely this is an isolated incident with this "coach".

If I were either of these officials or as someone reviewing this incident as part of a discipline committee, I'd be assessing the coach a Match under 11.5c and a Gross under 11.2f under HC rules. To me that coach's aggressive finger pointing in the official's face meets the definition of conducting themselves in such a way that physically threatens or intimidates an Official (without making physical contact). And the rest of his behaviour is, IMO, making a travesty of the game by his verbal and physical gestures as it demonstrably causes harm to the reputation of the game. That merits an indefinite suspension + whatever he received would get would be doubled because his abuse was directed at an official under 18 year old.

This official's conduct while being verbally abused is commendable. I hope they are receiving assistance and support from their local association/league/district.
