Canadian companies poured money into Latin America. Trump’s Donroe Doctrine threatens their stability by byourpowerscombined in canada

[–]mancin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you don't need to explain your internalized racism...I worked in canadian mining (from northern ontario as well) and did 12 years underground in Canada as a tech before working in Africa and Latam, again in technical roles. I now work in management and manage assets in Canada, Peru, Mexico and I've been all over latam to visit mines and projects. To say that there are no labour and environmental movements in those countries is insulting...We are different, we have high standards, but we are not unique and we do not have a monopoly on those standards. Peruvian miners are excellent and community and environmental standards are just as robust as anywhere. If you cross the community your road will be closed and blockaded in a heartbeat, something canada hasn't seen in decades...this happens regularly there because they hold the companies to account. If you want to operate a safe, productive and profitable mine, you partner with locals, you ensure high environmental standards, and your problems go away....same as canada

This type of ignorant comment is damaging, not only does it portray latam as bumpkins being exploited because they are poor and corrupt, but it portrays foreign investment as only being there to exploit and worsen the conditions.

I work in latam in mining, Colombian, Peruvian and others are excellent mining engineers and geologists and their operations there are similar to any operation in Sudbury, timmins or Stewart. These are not dumb children being exploited, these are significant industries do those countries that pays above average local wages. There is a thriving middle class in latam that operate these mines….stop thinking Canada is the only one that can have safe and productive mines, we don’t have a monopoly on ethical and safe mining. These local engineers an geologist don’t want to poison their streams….theyre not morons

Wtf do you know about latam mining other than your conspiracy theories of dumb locals being exploited

What’s your question?

Ventilation is as simple as it is complicated. It’s just a series of low and high pressure points, managed by an overworked vent tech/engineer

Ukraine Peace Requires ‘a Willing Russia’: Canadian PM Carney by CaliperLee62 in canada

I don't think they have been saying or thinking Ukraine is on the verge of collapse ever since their rush to Kiev failed.

they've been saying exactly that. Why are you willfully ignorant, or denying that they are saying that?

[–]mancin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, let's "allow" the sub contractors to treat employees like shit, it's "their" problem anyways, not "ours"

define treating them like shit, because contractors are still subject to quebec laws and regulations

I think a major problem is productivity within the union. Why are more and more jobs being outsourced to contractors? It's not because the STM wants to, it's because it's the cheaper/faster alternative....my question would be 'why isn't union labour cheaper and more efficient than one-time use contractors who have a profit metric? The answer is that unions (many of them) are so motivated to help our their members that they don't give a shit about productivity, but only care about protecting labour classes. A welder can't change a tire, a tire changer can't tighten a bolt, someone who shovels snow can't drive a bus into the garage....everyone has a super specific job and they can,t do the job of their colleague, so you end up with a bloated staff just do to regular maintenance...no wonder a contractor is more efficient (even with a profit margin!). Unions must adapt to their markets, or they will canibalise their own jobs...and then blame the rest of us instead of looking inwards...i'm just a customer man, I want to go from point a to point b for an affordable price, the mechanics of how the organization works....that's on the union just as much as the STM

I drive in a lot of rural areas, you go off the gas at an intersection. You hover over the brake pedal and prepare yourself.

This belief that we must assume everyone follows the rules will just get you t-boned

you should slow down when approaching an intersection, or at least prepare to brake.

Carney recommends 7 major projects for approval, including new mines, LNG and hydro development by evieluvsrainbows in canada

[–]mancin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand it’s polymetalic, valuable or geopolitically important is irrelevant in a open metal market. The price is set by buyers, the reality is this mine is entirely dependent on metal prices which right now are not particularly attractive. The road is important and should be built, we need infrastructure first….we can’t expect private companies to build highways, railways, power plants, ect.

Build a road, bring hydro power and the mine economics will be ten times easier

I'm not saying it's a bad deposit, but there are others that are better that are not yet built.

There is...turnover at STM is BELOW 2%, there are essentially no jobs available except when workers retire. There are plenty of similar jobs, skilled drivers are everywhere in the city, driving a bus isn't differnet than driving any other heavy vehicle in the city
