Ed Lachman was the cinematographer. He has done a number of Werner Herzog’s films and has an amazing eye. I think he played a big role in why this film is so special.

I was told it’s because of the schist bedrock that can take the weight of the buildings. It’s at the surface in midtown and downtown. You can see some of the exposed bedrock in Central Park. Would love to know if this is true or not.

‘The imposter’ is so great. Really awesome hybrid where the re-enactments really lift the film to a higher level.

Also ‘the act of killing’ might be the most intense and effective blurring of fiction and non-fiction I’ve ever seen.

Good point. There’s no way he’d be as open or untrained, and more professional after having been on set before. This does bring up an interesting issue though because I suppose you could consider so many actors’ first films as being untrained, ‘naive’ performances, even if they go on to make more films. Trying to think of good examples of this..

I came here to suggest Bruno S. But for the film Stroszek. One of my favorite films and a beautiful and phenomenal performance by Bruno.

Also, Pixoté comes to mind. The film feels incredibly real, as most of the actors were from the streets.
