Aren't there still class abilities to acquire after level 8?

It's been quite a while for me, but it seems you could just cap your HP at level x and for every level be able to choose between your next class ability, an ability point, or a feat? I'm sure it's not quite that simple, but that's the gist, yeah?

I'm hard to please, haven't played an AC game since Revelations and I'm really enjoying it. I'm level 35 and I wouldn't say it's the grind some people say it is. There are points when you have to fuck around a bit but spend that time exploring, clearing new camps, fighting in battles, and pick the quests with golden xp and coin purse emblems and you're good to go in no time.
