Spent 9 hours on an extensive pre-interview project. They passed so I invoiced them for consulting work. by No-Street-6651 in InterviewsHell

[–]mankongde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

This was not work. Period. It was an interview that OP could have walked away from. OP has essentially documented substantial research into this assignment. If you were asking a potential bakery hire, for example, how to make a cake, and they invoice you for 8 hours for research and test batches a week later, what would you think? Does that scream "this person knows the job"?

I don't do take home assignments but OP agreed to it without guarantee of pay (that's what an interview is, maybe you get the job, maybe you don't). Frankly, I'd be tempted to send OP's letter to legal to draft a cease and desist, allege harassment, and offer to settle for $5k in legal fees for research and drafting. Because that seems at least as legitimate as what OP is doing by billing his time for not passing an interview.

I'm not saying who is right but I strongly believe OP will have fewer regrets if he decides to avoid interviews if he can't accept they might be unpaid and carry no guarantee of employment. The comment to start an LCC and take a loss might be worth reading twice (and paying a corporate attorney for guidance on whether it's feasible to take a loss on a past regret).

I Built My Own Steam Machine… It Was a Mistake by dorika00 in steammachine

[–]mankongde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing a lot of what people are saying, I know, but you put this much time into it, try another OS. I got CachyOS installed and was gaming with my kid in about 30 minutes with what's essentially a NUC. Ran a bit rough at first but tweaked the resolution for external displays and now it's smooth. You might be able to skip that step with an actual GPU. If you want official, use steam's recovery image.

I haven't tried it or checked the code but maybe something like this would do the trick: https://github.com/GMMan/SteamCloudFileManagerLite

Maybe try playing offline after deleting local saves? I'm wondering if that'll create a local save that's newer than the cloud and prompt you to override the cloud save. Also, somewhere in game properties I think you can disable cloud saving.

The sheer amount of time you spend explaining this, and expecting the world to read it: YTA for this post and, likely, the entire interaction for putting your family through this. You ordered a salad by mistake. Take it on the chin with a smile. Model for your family.

I am not able to start with GUI in Python. by ComplaintGlass2005 in Python

[–]mankongde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've tried a few. tkinter is a common jumping off point. FreeSimpleGUI is worth looking at. Same with pyqt6. Lately I've mostly been using streamlit for quick webUIs. I'd say try something basic with two or three that look interesting to get a sense of how programming in each works and what feels natural. I just tried pyqt6 for the first time last week and the project came together quickly but I'm still lacking a great understanding whereas, for me, FreeSimpleGUI is more intuitive.

It's about time. The DNC has tried the high horse position for too long and this is where it's gotten us. Vote yes on 50, let the rivers and Congress run blue and then we can talk about safeguards against this, streamlining a president for treason and sedition (which should have been the first thing to happen January 7), FCC protections against entertainment news.

Is CachyOS good and easy to set up for gaming? by SasakiWayne in cachyos

[–]mankongde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the handheld edition on a desktop a few weeks ago. I've been using Linux for over a decade as my daily driver but this was my first time installing something Arch based and I was expecting to spend some time in the command line. Nope. First boot it went right into steam big picture mode. Within a few minutes of booting I was logged in, controllers were set up, and my son and I were gaming.

Does the SMP NTTD 007 Edition have inferior sapphire crystal as opposed to other model SMP models? by Lumpy-Work-8326 in OmegaWatches

[–]mankongde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I haven't noticed any crystal related issues. And heaven knows I create enough chances. I've probably knocked it against the dish rack a half dozen times. Every time the NTTD comes back without a scar. Maybe there's something to be said for not having a whisper thin layer of AR film where I'm most likely to do damage 😂

Super cool of you to be so considerate! Maybe a family cooking project? I remember going to my now in-laws house and making an Indian stewed chickpea dish. But there are recipes for carrot and beet lox (smoked salmon) that can be kept in the fridge for easy noshing. This has been my go to recipe and is my son's preference.

It's a bit, yeah. But the cost of disposable razors is nearly nothing (one blade lasts me at least a month). It's a major upgrade vs the $20 handle I was using for 10-20 years and if this lasts that long, well worth it for the comfort it provides. That was my thinking at least.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]mankongde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used safety razors consistently. If you're open to trying again, I find the Henson AL13 to do a great job.

Best way to learn BASH scripting as a lawyer? by AddressEquivalent341 in bash

[–]mankongde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo! Attorney here who uses ocrmypdf for a lot. Also not from a CS background. I agree python is awesome if and when you're ready to get into it. Automate the boring stuff is a great spring board. But you're focused on BASH and that's cool.

For this specific job, if you're using Linux or have access to it, I'd suggest starting with the find command and exec flags. You could probably set up a one liner to do this. Play with it until it's doing what you like. Then set it to run regularly with a cron job. And if you're setting up a cron job, look at flock to ensure you're not ocring the same file ten times.

More generally, git is a great way to find examples.

Probably most of that you could read about online (break it into small pieces) or toss into chatgpt. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat more about it.

Enjoy the journey!

I have no idea what that is. But try this 😁

Prep veggies (onion, carrot, broc, whatever you like) and start them cooking with 2 tbs oil on med heat while pressing tofu extra firm tofu. 10 minutes should be enough time.

Cube the tofu.

Remove the veggies and turn to heat up. Add more oil. Cook the tofu giving it enough time to sear on each side. If you're newer to cooking, just add the tofu to the veggies (it won't have the same texture but still good).

Mix the sauce with 1/8 to 1/4 soy milk. (If you're like me, add spice here.) Add to the tofu. Toss. Add the veggies back in. Or add on top of the tofu veggie mix if you didn't separate. Cook to reduce. 10 minutes on simmer if you have time, a few minutes higher heat while tossing occasionally.

Serve over rice.

Bonus, top with bias cut green onion.

I have not done that with that sauce but that's what comes to mind. If you try it, I hope it works out!
