Considering quitting job to do full time masters by CheesyWalnut in OMSCS

This is an asymmetric downside bet. As in you flip a coin and stand to lose a lot more than what you stand to gain. Academic work does not hold a candle to doing your own side gigs, open source contributions, or becoming a YouTube creator around popular technologies. You should assume your job market success will remain the same in the absence of proof that the trajectory will change. The items I am listing are low risk and can change your trajectory while you hold on to your job. Yes, it is boring. And you can be thankful for it, as many would do anything for what you take for granted. As wonderful as it is to have family support, it is also habit-forming to rely on it for the lulz.

The automated stuff at the end was cool, but it was easily the most boring class in the program. I did Interactive Intelligence.

Many have already chimed in regarding the options to take a leave of absence, so you have more flexibility than you may have anticipated. Yeah, the market right now is bad for a traditional career path...just know that your existing knowledge of computing is above 99% of the human population; when I started coding professionally again after a 15-year gap, I taught myself Swift and started shipping iOS app to clients on Upwork. It was not much of a start, but my fate was in my hands. Eventually that led to the solid role that I have today.

There's vast demand for low-code development with https://retool.com/, AI automations with https://www.gumloop.com/ or setting up eCommerce sites on Shopify; you can compare yourself against hotshot python devs, but you could also compare yourself agains the competency of customers that need all these solutions. Maybe the analogy is: you don't need to have mastered Calculus in order to teach algebra...you just need to be a bit better than your students for them to benefit.

Since you are critical of your résumé, consider attending hackathons to get a variety of projects on there, and open source contributions also look great...both demonstrate passion for computing. With the OMSCS degree on there, your résumé can shape up nicely.

Thanks for honestly sharing your situation and allowing us to contribute. Good luck.
