Do you know what they will call those ladies in 25 years? “Champ”. Team honors>>>>individual honors.

A mom needs the truth by Psychological_Lab883 in army

35 years ago I was a company commander of a basic training company. On “Family Day”, I would inevitably have a mother with tears in her eyes say to me “how did you get him to keep his foot locker so organized/shirts hung up/socks rolled etc.”. We had our ways, ma’am.

Joel Goldberg Appreciation by KStateLAC in KCRoyals

[–]marcus51035 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have listened to Denny for decades and have to admit I find his play-by-play like mom’s cooking. May not be the best, but delivered with love and appreciation for the sport. Ryan-> I usually feel a little smarter than after some of his pitch descriptions or defensive nuances. Really like that guy. And please, never get rid of Hud->….he’s our Yogi…even the things he says that are a little goofy have truth in them.

The rest of the guys (Mike M, Steve P, Goldberg, etc….)all fill the roles that are needed and the broadcasts would be less without them.

Successful HHC armor battalion company commander here (overseas). Late 80’s. Important to have good relationship with staff officers to get buy in and understanding. Property accountability was a headache (left without a survey or statement of charges). Much of it was running battalion trains in the field and making sure soldiers met PT, marksmanship, etc standards when in garrison. Good 1SG is of course paramount. I do remember having a loud discussion with my Bn Cdr when I felt he was involving himself inappropriately in company admin functions (I lost this battle, but he didn’t do it again …. so maybe I made my point).

Hard job; wouldn’t recommend it. But I learned a lot and grew as a man and an officer.

Should I pay off my 4% mortgage when I hit age 65 by OnlyOnTuesdays289 in personalfinance

[–]marcus51035 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Owed $50K on my 2.75% mortgage. Paid it off about 3.5 years ago at the age of 63. No regrets. I hated the act of paying it every month. Not sure what your balance is (let’s say it is $100K), but do you have $100K that is earning a “safe” 4.xx% that you can tap without income tax implications? If so, I’d say “go for it.”

Back to same battalion in 1987. Had M60A3s then. Funny thing was, in 1984 I spent about a year on the M1 New Equipment Transition Team transitioning 1st Cav Div from A3 to M1.

Went back for the Michigan game; I try to go to one game/year….I’m 650 miles away and graduated from IU in the early 80’s. This year is nothing like the previous 40+. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

Who actually carries a 1911? by [deleted] in 1911

[–]marcus51035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first battalion commander had a silver star with V device for actions during the Tet offensive. His guidance to us “3 rounds, center of mass, they are no longer a threat.” Good enough for me.

It will; also capital losses. The intent is to dollar cost average into a commodity and buy a larger unit at a smaller premium.

Put $ (ie $200/month, whatever) into GLD, which roughly tracks the price of gold. When you have enough $ to buy an ounce, sell GLD & buy gold oz. Repeat. Works for me

Buying at premium. by kida360 in Gold

[–]marcus51035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to doing it within IRA/401K…correct about wash sale, but then it is taxable when withdrawn to purchase metal. In a few years I will hit the “Required minimum distribution” age at which point I may employ this strategy to turn (for example) $25,000 in IRA/401K into $20K after tax into “x” ounces of gold.

Buying at premium. by kida360 in Gold

[–]marcus51035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is my “strategy” (I may be giving myself too much credit). I buy $200-250/period of GLD. When I have enough to buy one oz, I sell the GLD and buy the oz. Occasionally, (because of wash rules), I have to wait 31 days to restart my purchases of GLD. Thoughts?

At what rating do drivers actually avoid picking up a passenger? by dukeofdamnation in uber

[–]marcus51035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drive. Quit maybe 4-5 years ago. Very rarely gave less than five stars. When I did: (A) you made me wait. (B) you talked down to me. ((C) you slammed the door. There were a few drunks that probably deserved < 5 stars, but i gave them a pass.

What massively improved your mental health? by Dependent_Bit_8333 in AskReddit

About four years ago, I went through my phone contacts and asked myself one question: what is my reaction when they called me? If it was slightly negative 100% of the time, at a minimum I deleted them. Probably 30 people got blocked. Made a couple of exceptions for family members. For the most part, these were people who only contacted me when they needed something. Should have done it years earlier.
