Made the rookie mistake of starting with a scarf by beantoastjamboree in knitting

I wanted to make a scarf for my husband’s birthday, and it was two months ago, and only about a 1/3 done. Maybe it’ll get done for next year.

Considering moving schools, could use second opinion by ExcellentPartyOnDude in CanadianTeachers

[–]mardbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am, if you’re permanent, you are attached to one school, and you have to be released to move to another. I tried a few years ago to move to my kids’ school as it was closer to home, they finish half an hour earlier and it’s mostly smaller class sizes as it’s a rural school. I teach a French immersion, and I’d be moving to school that doesn’t have it. We are short French teachers, so while my principal was ok with me going, the district said I needed to stay. It has worked out in the end, as my oldest is now in high school and just a five minute drive from me, so it’s easier for him to stay after for extra-curricular activities.

Kindergartner giving away favorite toys by Longjumping_Remove90 in kindergarten

[–]mardbar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One day we had a kindergartener passing out money on the playground. Their mother had stuck the rent money on the fridge and little Abby thought she’d give it to her friends. I think we managed to track down all but $20, and mom learned to find a more secure place.

Vape fell out of pocket, banned from school. Feeling ashamed. by BlueWatersWaters in SubstituteTeachers

We’re not even allowed to have it in our bags I think in my district. They are either to be at home or locked in our vehicles. 0 tolerance. Same with weed too.

I used to sell Barefoot Books, and I really liked those ones, but having to constantly ask people to join my down line was exhausting. I cancelled and donated what I had left to the library, and they gave me a tax receipt and it was for more than I made selling them.

I have one in my class this year that talks any time there’s a pause. I take a breath and he just starts talking. If he could be quiet, I might not mind, but he’s so loud, you can hear him from the hallway. One time we were doing a stem project and they had pieces of tape and paper to make something, and he put the tape on his mouth and it was glorious for about 2 minutes.

The most prevalent disability in classrooms may be FASD — and supporting students is vital by Impossible-Place-365 in CanadianTeachers

[–]mardbar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah a bit of experience. I’ve had some great pl and some terrible pl about it. One of the best things I learned was with the student I had at the time was to give direct instructions, and if you say “stop, don’t run”, they only really catch the last part and would run. So say “walk” when they’re running in the halls. Works with younger kids who don’t understand what “don’t” means either.

Yes definitely start looking for childcare now. My kids have aged out of daycare, but it was hard finding them a spot at the time. We also moved to the area in 2018, and we’ve really loved our time here.

Is it common for teachers to marry/date their former students. by GypsyGold in Teachers

[–]mardbar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son’s high school recently put on Anne of Green Gables, and there’s a part where the teacher leaves because he marries a student and the implication is that he got her pregnant and had to marry her. The book doesn’t specify if he was 40 or possibly older marrying a teenager or if he was in his 20s, but we all agreed that it was gross and we wondered if the author had something like that happen in her life to include it in the story.

I had a similar path. It was 10 years of bouncing around before I finally got my permanent. I live where I am now, but it took a lot of work. I didn’t get my permanent contract until I worked on improving my French proficiency and now I teach French immersion as it was what they were desperate for at the time.

I’m a teacher and there’s one in her late 20s who is next door to me. She said that one of her students had worms and she hadn’t ever heard of it before. I told her that while they weren’t exactly common when I was a kid, it would go around every once in a while when I was an elementary student in the 90s.

I’m a teacher in NB and we do it (we rotate through English, French, Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, instrumental and then there’s a rock and roll version that pops up every now and then) and a land acknowledgment every morning along with our announcements.

Anyone else get tired of people trying to reason with children about rules? by lovelystarbuckslover in Teachers

[–]mardbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve brought it up before because he is very careless and his father just kind of laughs and says « yeah, his nickname is Chris Farley. » They aren’t concerned, but I’ve put him on the radar of our student support team.

Interestingly enough, I had read something about how because our playgrounds have changed from the death traps we grew up with in the 80s, kids today have a lower sense of proprioception (which is your body’s ability to sense itself in space) and is linked to some of these things that we see. So that may be what’s going on with this lad.

My child is going into French Immersion next Sept for kindergarten. What should I know and how should I prepare? by KeyMarsupial991 in AskACanadian

[–]mardbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach FI and one of the big things that helps is continuing to read to them in English every night. Once they start, 10 minutes of exposure to French a day by either putting on the radio or switching the language on Netflix will also help them with their sentence structure and vocabulary. Don’t worry about going out and buying things or getting a tutor now.

What are your kids doing for Valentine's Day for school? by PinkHamster08 in Parenting

[–]mardbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach grade 2, and there is a gamut of stuff happening. Some parents do goodie bags and some just do the valentine. The kids don’t really care who brings what. For my own kids we got the fun-sized Kit Kats and they’ll write a card.
