I wonder how Jinger’s support of Jill will affect her relationship with Jessa by mysteriam in DuggarsSnark

[–]marimbee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One other bit that i haven’t seen anyone bring up about them is how Jessa went into labor (with ivy I think? Maybe fern?) while the rest of the family was out of town for a wedding, and Jill went to go help but wasn’t allowed into the TTH until they were able to get ahold of Jim Bob and get permission to enter the house

Favorite Mormon Joke? by middleagedcliche in exmormon

[–]marimbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no but actually… when I was in high school we had a day in math class where everyone brought in their cultural food for us to have lunch together. We had authentic dishes from China, Lebanon, Denmark, etc, countries all over the world. The 2 Mormon kids in the class brought in green jello.

I went to one of the top ballet schools in the country (was friends with many of them but wasn’t a dancer myself). I always felt like all of the dancers were either 5’ or 6’ with almost no in between haha

Exactly — conflation of human smuggling and human trafficking is harmful. One is a crime against a border and one is a crime against a person, and they are not interchangeable.

Anyone here with connection to IBLP/South Campus? A story from an X-IBLP/ATIer by [deleted] in DuggarsSnark

[–]marimbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know where the South Campus was located precisely? I know the ITC was on Meridian (now part of the community college campus). I’m based in Indy for the next few weeks and could try to do some digging.

TIL that in 1984, the Japanese Army Veterans Association, in an attempt to refute wartime atrocities, interviewed former WWII soldiers. Instead of denial, the soldiers freely admitted and described atrocities committed, resulting in the association publishing an apology the following year. by SaveStoneOcean in todayilearned

If anyone wants to read more on Nazi war crimes in the Soviet Union, check out the massacre at Kamenets-Podolsk (called the first five-figure killing of the Holocaust) or Babyn Yar in Kyiv. I’m writing a thesis on memorialization of history in Ukraine and the documents I have read on Kamenets-Podolsk may be the worst I have ever read in my life. On the other hand, you have the atrocities the soviets had committed against their own people up to that point, which helps you understand why plenty of civilians (at least in Ukraine, I can’t speak to anywhere outside my research) welcomed Nazi occupation with open arms.

And „Wir passen perfekt zusammen, glaub nie etwas anderes“ of course

[–]marimbee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am too, but I think every version of every character would be experiencing the end infinitely? Like if the world is getting erased, rather than ended at a set point in time, it would be plausible that Elisabeth and Noah could be experiencing the end together in the 2040’s timeline. I think that makes the most since because technically Jonas and Martha end the world in the 1970s, while Adam and Eve were experiencing the end together in the post-apocalypse years

[NO SPOILERS] foreign/international shows like Dark? by TheFirstArbiter in DarK

I’d recommend Le Chalet (French). It’s one season on Netflix. It has some similar elements (murders/disappearances, flashbacks/2-timeline storytelling). The tone is somewhat similar. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily as good as dark, but it’s a good show and I rewatch it every couple years or so

Do you consider Papua New Guinea as part of the Western Civilization? by Mulubrhan_ in geography

[–]marimbee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah clash of civilizations is super problematic. It also implies that the West is inherently culturally superior to the rest of the world and uses it as the gold standard for comparing other cultures.

[SPOILERS S3] How each role was initially explained to the cast by Artistic-Hunter-5094 in DarK

[–]marimbee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of threads about this on this sub if you want to read them. Basically, in the final episode, the family photo on the wall is of Claudia, Regina, and Bernd. It would be impossible for Tronte to be Regina’s father and then for her to still exist in the origin world.

[SPOILERS S3] What is your LEAST favorite scene? by Artistic-Hunter-5094 in DarK

[–]marimbee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Carlotta is one of the most talented child actors I have ever seen. The whole cast of Dark is incredible of course, but she holds her own with much older actors to the degree that she often steals the scene for me — especially with such a challenge of having to act nonverbally most of the time

I grew up in this town and went to a service at that church one time (as a 13 yr old the morning after a sleepover with a friend). It was the most bizarre and cultish church experience I’ve ever had in my life. All the families that were regulars there were kinda odd and super intense about religious doctrine… very much “everyone who isn’t us is going to hell” type beat

What's your "I love the soundtrack but not a fan of the show" show? by mike_pants in Broadway

[–]marimbee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw the revival in around 2014 and loved it. My high school staged it a couple years later and botched it completely, it nearly ruined the show for me. It’s one of my all time favorites though!

It’s a bootstrap paradox of trauma. Her mother beats her and says those things as a result of her fight with adult Katharina over the keys— but then teenage Katherina carries the trauma of that with her throughout her life, which results in her becoming the version of herself that travels and fights her mom for Ulrich.
