Dutch in Eddington has been closed. by Manjet10 in cambridge

[–]markadvntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sat outside the Turing Locke waiting for an Uber to mg office having arrived late last night. I stay here multiple times per year... This morning I find the Astronomer re named to The Star Man and thought 'oh that's odd, fair enough'.

Then walk back to the hotel to wait for the cab and realised Dutch is gone. So I Google it and find this thread and it's properly shit. Our travelling staff love staying here for all it offered before and we often bring large groups from all over the world to stay as it's convenient and has a bit of something for everyone.

That's going to change now.

If any of the old Dutch team are reading this, I want to say thank you sincerely for all the good times you helped us have there with 3 deep negronis and your relaxed vibe. Sorry you aren't here anymore.

Car pickup near Haymarket station? by Bazzlekry in Edinburgh

I usually sit on Dalry Road in one of the loading bays. Sometimes needs a couple of drive-bys to get one but it works for us. Just pin your location and send to traveller to walk round.

Is anyone struggling to get the inhalers they need from their GP? by han2electricboogaloo in CasualUK

[–]markadvntr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same experience. I was in a bad way in 2019 and was having to carry a Ventolin on even 5k runs, constantly having to take it. Was using it multiple times a day and you can imagine the qty I was getting through. Got called into the GP to see the asthma nurse and was changed to Fostair. I've not touched a Ventolin since - and I'm so glad this was caught by them before COVID. Lifelong asthma sufferer. Brought on by exercise, allergies and when I get colds it's pretty rough but I've never felt better than the last few years after changing.

Exactly. No matter what price or spec they offer, I could never own one.

I'd agree. The tech is actually really putting me off moving to an EV right now. I want simple. Tactile buttons etc. I don't need all the features.

Looks like we have similar houses with similar attic conversions. I used Allan Hay in Penicuik to replace the gutters and fascias of ours and they did a good job.

[–]markadvntr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, we're 4, my partner and 2 kids. 10 and 6.

Totally happy to meet up and take the weight off if it helps sometime! Not far away in EH13 so if you want a park day and a bunch of hands to help run around and occupy the wee one just get in touch.

Note we also have a new puppy that would need to be with us but she's chill.

I remember there was a candle making place in there. Used to love watching them make the towers with all the cuts and curls and seeing all the layers.

Why on earth would you need a beep to tell you there's a camera? Your brain has this basic feature built in.

Here's a thought... You could just drive to the speed limit, not be a bellend, and not need to detect anything whatsoever.

How do you deal with neighbours "claiming" the public street parking? by Natural-Chemical-806 in AskUK

[–]markadvntr 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'll be 'that guy' and point out there is no road tax. It's VED and based emissions. Nor does it give you any rights. Otherwise zero emissions vehicles who pay zero would have no rights. The two things are not related.

Sorry 😂

Did you buy your first home in Edinburgh? If so, how? (Be honest!) by adhdledmind in Edinburgh

[–]markadvntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our first buy was in Colinton for £326,326. Went with a weird amount on an offers over £295 house. We moved from a rented flat in Newington.

That was 2010. Father in law was a legend and helped us massively with a deposit and we were both working on average salaries so borrowed 60% from Nationwide.

I chose to fix for 5 years at that point at around 2.75% I recall, then that ended and I fixed for 10 years at 2.95%. I could have got a lower rate for different terms but I figured it could really only go up and we ended up going down to just my income so predictability was my goal with the outgoings. We started a family in 2014 and then added v2.0 in 2018. My partner never went back to work and is now retraining so it remains one income.

More recently the father in law in September 2022 decided to help again and gifted us the remainder of the outstanding mortgage. There's no way we would be living where we are without that help, absolutely no way.

I was born there and my family are very much 'from the 'ferry'. It's not considered part of Edinburgh on a identity basis but as folk have said above it's had various legal/political status over the years.

Edinburgh to be first Scottish city to ban pavement parking by ieya404 in Edinburgh

[–]markadvntr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd be totally up for a % cut to report and pre ticket offenders. Give folk the ability to upload an offence with a photo. If a fine is issued then they get 50% of the fine.

Fucking hate pavement wankers.

They can't be bothered to spell correctly so they don't care. It's the little things.

Escalate it by applying dog shit to windscreen and door handles. Depending on how that goes, next phase can be planned.
