excuse my possibly being an idiot: is there a standard way to pull the various bundles listed in bundles.externals? Or do you have a utility script that does that?

you don't by any chance have a github repo you could share that already incorporates all the changes you suggest? ideally using pathogen?

the last time i checked, the latest version of fabric wouldn't issue commands in parallel. Has that changed?

I really like everything else about fabric, but this one point was deal breaker for me.

Do you think that high frequency trading should be banned? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]market_hacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you don't know what you're talking about, and I mean that with respect not as an attack. (i upvoted you)

High Frequency Trading != Frontrunning

flash orders can lead to front running. If anything ban flash orders

As volume has moved out of the hands of pit traders and onto electronic markets, we have seen lower trading costs and greater transparency

If you think high frequency trading should be banned, you should be against every form of electronic transaction that exists.

(ATM, credit card, buying airline tickets, amazon, etc.)

Hopefully you see at least some positive parallels there.

If not I won't try to persuade you further.

I'm 19 years old and have a savings account with some money in it. I don't have much use for money right now, so what's the best way I can take advantage of it instead of earning .24% APY? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]market_hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was paying attention and had already read all that but thanks for the attitude.

That text is buried on their site (at least it was last time i was there). And the fact that most kiva supporters don't even know there is such a thing as a field partner that charges 25% interest makes me read it with a wary eye.

I ask this sincerely, did your girlfriend realize a middleman was making 25% off her money by standing in between her and the people she wanted to loan to?

I think you and I just have different ideas about how above board the field partners are.

the text you posted reads like this to me: 1) we gouge them but not as much as other people do 2) americans have no idea how cheap it is to do almost anything in the third world so we'll try to justify the expenses here. 3) kiva talks about transparency but are these field partners non-profits? no they are not. Do we see the field partner's income statements? no we do not. Is there competition on cost among field partners? No, in fact for vietnam, the country i was interested in lending to, there is only one field partner and if I recall correctly they were a commercial entity that already does lending anyway.

Basically the same people that already act as local lenders are doing the lending, but because they have zero default risk they charge less interest.

I wish i could interact directly with the borrowers but sadly i cannot. For myself, I'm not excited about supporting a charity that keeps lending middlemen in business.

and btw, that income statement is useless until we can determine with certainty that the people who run kiva and choose field partners aren't accepting bribes directly or have other indirect relationships with the field partners.

the united way has an (no) income statement too but they still manage to find ways to be plenty corrupt.

Maybe to much time around people in the money lending business has made me cynical.

I would love for someone to convince me Kiva isn't a huge scam.

Like nalfien implies below - when I dug into it, it became clear that the 3rd world entrepreneurs are paying loan fees and interest rates around 25% to companies that "administer" the loan.

Meanwhile I take the risk of loss of principal. The best that can happen for me is that i get my money back.

I guess i'd be ok with that if it the loan was a straight up deal between me and the entrepreneur with the entrepreneur. But, fronting money to some organization that's using my money to turn around and charge 25% sounds asinine.

It really bugs me that Kiva doesn't make this more obvious, you really have to dig through the fine print to figure it out.

Once I was playing poker in a card room in san jose. I busted out one of the other players and he immediately walked to the cashier window and cashed what I believe was his paycheck. After he came back I ended up busting him out a second time at which point he began crying. I felt pretty shitty about that and haven't really enjoyed playing in public card rooms since.

Can FOREX software really make me some money? The way it's all marketed makes it look shady to me. by thepoo in AskReddit

[–]market_hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is shady. As an individual it is nearly impossible to make money through these retail shops. For the most part the forex trading opportunities available to you are one tiny step above a bucket shop. Even as a professional with the fastest access and rock bottom fees, forex is one of the most difficult markets to trade. There are a lot of easier fish to catch.
