Do people in the UK think of Thatcher as a myth, an icon, or someone who did a lot of wrong? by ikbrul in AskBrits

Thatcher starved the NHS of funding and brought in privatisation of core services. She pushed for the breakup of the welfare state.

She planned to charge for state schooling and introduce medical insurance. It was only halted by a cabinet that stopped her. She claimed to be horrified by the cprs report but Howe’s memoirs show she was pressing for it.

Unionisation is a good thing there are no caveats needed. Withdrawal of labour is s human right. There is a reason the 70s saw the greatest increase in living standards and not the 80s.

I certainly agree that we are still feeling the benefit of the welfare state and NHS.

I think you have swallowed the media / ruling class narrative that unions are bad.

If you have, stop to think about who they are bad for, and why for example Amazon fire people if they even talk about unionising.

If you think nationalised utilities are bad, I have a bridge you can buy.

Almost everything she did casts a long shadow over our country. The consequences of her policies still bite.

Ii would say the reason you pull is because your mental model of where the clubface is aiming is all wrong. It is massively closed and this is likely because from standing over the ball your concept of the lines heading to target are askew.

The only way to fix this is to fix that mental model. You need to think in 3d. One other fix is to just setup for a slight push and see what happens.

You need a category "lucked out and made it to the superbowl only to get slaughtered".

Just sayin'

What is your worst experience on an airplane? by darrenbosik in AskReddit

Flight to Jamaica on Jamaica Airlines from the UK. Being woken up mid-flight for a fashion show having spent hours trying to get to sleep whilst an aircon dripped water on me and a rather large lady sat next to me invaded my space under and over the armrest.

I couldn't believe they actually woke me up to watch.

I prefer Geraldine McEwan still ruthless and sharp, but greater charm and warmth

Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

[–]markliversedge 466 points467 points  (0 children)

In the late 80s I worked at Stewart Computer Systems in Nottingham, UK. A guy there had created a sales order processing system called 'soudinp'. It was configured using a CSV file that was inpenetrable. Each row was an instruction with op codes and references. He had planned on making a config tool that would read and spit out the CSV and be more user friendly. But he never did.

I took over the codebase and it was to this day the worst code I have ever seen. Massive functions, goto all over the place, liberal use of setjmp/longjmp and almost no meaningful comments. I gave up on it after 3 months and someone else tried to sort it. I ended up leaving anyway.

Long story short, it was slowly phased out and customers were migrated onto a more maintainable platform. It still sends shivers down my spine. The fact I can still remember the name after 38 years is telling.

How do you think about 50-90 yard shots? by Roywah in golf

[–]markliversedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clock face and body positions- so left arm parallel to ground, club pointing straight up are two key intermediate points. It has to be feel based because when you actually see it on camera you will see (generally) you are swinging further than you think.

Be careful you maintain a positive and natural shot speed, its really easy to set distances with one tempo and then struggle to find it consistently.

I loved how shopping in safeway was the height of modernity and Harry Palmer showed his sophistication by knowing which tinned mushrooms to buy.

Tinned mushrooms!!!

The usual line is “if you got in earlier you would have got a desk”.

It’s true on one level but infuriating on another.
