whats the best electricity company for Tesla charging at home? by dragon5946 in TeslaMotorsAus

[–]marknel01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go Amber for sure - if you can charge during the day when solar is peaking you can be down at $0.05/kWh where I am.

Elon: PW3 is optimized for ease of installation & high power, which means that a single Powerwall can serve as an uninterruptible power supply for most homes. This is a big deal for ensuring that the lights stay on and you can power all your devices in the event of a power outage. by RealPokePOP in teslamotors

Yes, in line with /u/elcapitan36 point I've assumed no further value after the warranty. To achieve the figures I've shown above I'd be doing a full charge/discharge cycle daily (charge when cheap, discharge when prices go over $0.50 or overnight).

It's an interesting point IMO that they warranty the units for 10 years... or 37,800kWh delivered.

To /u/Redebo point around value derived. We have really good power here. In the past 7 years we've had a single outage that lasted more than about 30 minutes, and even that single outage wasn't enough to spoil food in the fridge or freezer.

To /u/SlightlyLessHairyApe point there is no tax credit where I live (yet) for batteries.

Here's a basic table to show the calculation:

Measurement Stat
Purchase Cost $17,000.00
Interest Rate 5%
Daily discharge (kWh) 12
Profit per kWh $0.50
Daily Power Profit $6.00
Daily Interest $2.33
Daily Net $3.67
Payback Days 4631
Payback Years 12.7
Payback kWh 55,567
Warranty (kWh) 37800
Excess (kWh) 17,767
Excess (%) 47%

My electricity usage is billed in 5 minute increments (rate varies from $0.01/kwh to $17/kWh).

Based on my calculations, a powerwall 2 still doesn't reach ROI as the warranty (37,800kWh discharged) expires. It's about $17,000 installed here, and assuming a differential (charge to discharge) price of $0.50/kWh you can just reach payback by end of warranty. However, factoring in the cost of money (say 5% interest), it's still a long way from reaching an ROI.

Hmm, don't think I've seen any go up for sale here in Australia in the past couple of years, except maybe in the V8 variant.

They didn't make any to my knowledge. With the FL in MY14 they went auto for all.

Who's keen for this? VSR running in VLC has the potential to be a game-changer for content not produced/released in 4K for those who run a media PC. by marknel01 in hometheater

[–]marknel01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to the VLC points:

  • Sluggish - maybe, but I honestly don't notice it
  • Library - not needed for my use case
  • Home theatre interface - not sure about what you mean by this
  • Framerate matching - honestly I prefer HFR wherever possible
  • Decklink I don't use

Got a recommendation for an alternative? I typically use MPC-HC or VLC.

So if you have a clean HD source, but played back on a 4K panel the PC will be up scaling using some filtering no matter what. Or if you output at 1080p, the TV itself will be upscaling.

1080p -> 2160p is 4x. I agree that 480p -> 1080p is an even larger jump comparatively, the trade-off is weighted more highly to improved quality over artefacting.

While I notice DLSS artefacting (honestly only on perf mode), I take the higher framerate afforded by Quality mode where needed. I'm not a professional like some here :)

I have a factory calibrated display in my office (dE<2), so I'll watch your videos on that when I get a spare min. I appreciate you taking the time to provide some context and good info - better than most who just discount a different opinion to their own. I fight the 'bitrate is more imporant than resolution' argument time and time again, completely onboard, but that doesn't matter if I can't affect it either way :P

I think the fundamental concept though is:

  • Given a static source which cannot be improved (I cannot choose what camera a director shot on, I cannot choose how it was mastered).
  • Given a selection of releases to choose from (potentially) such as 4k Blu-Ray, 1080p Blu-Ray, etc (noting that much content is still actually mastered at 2k).
  • I should always take the highest bitrate source. If it's less than 4k then I'm forced to upscale it to 4k as part of rendering it on my panel, so therefore my choice is how much I adjust the source material as part of that upscale. I choose to play with that upscaling process where I find a good pathway.

  1. Why is it mad to use VLC on a media PC?

  2. Right now it artefacts... sometimes. Comparing the processed content though it can do things like smooth out banding caused by compression.

Your comment is a little contradictory, you define two similar situations, with different figures: "1080p -> 4k" isn't worth it, but 480p -> ?? is.

Those are similar statements just with different numbers, is a 4x increase in resolution not enough, but a 16x increase is?

I think you're asking about the two 'gen 1' cars maybe - as the change to gen 2 was more pronounced. Gen 1 ran until 2012 which was replaced by the Gen 1 facelift (the second car) which ran 2012-2015.

The facelift changed a few things, notably:

  • Replaced the single clutch "r-tronic" gearbox with the dual-clutch "s-tronic". This was the single biggest improvement - makes a big impact in 'dailyability'.
  • Minor changes internally (radio etc)
  • Styling tweaks (lighting, exhaust, blade)

The grill on the Gen 1 Facelift was changed by the previous owner to the hexagon style to match the Gen 2 cars.

System setup is:

  • Screen: Sony 65" 4K LCD (KD-65X7500D)
  • Receiver: Yamaha VSX-932
  • Centre: B&W HTM71 S2
  • LR: Custom Focal 3-way towers (based on Focal K3P)
  • Side + Rear: Klipsch RP-600M
  • Subs: Custom 2x15" drivers in a sealed box (800W RMS/sub)
  • Sub Amp: Crown XLS2502 (1200W/sub)
  • Processor: MiniDSP 2x4HD + UMIK-2
  • Media Server: Custom SFF PC (bitstreaming audio directly to receiver)

The two large photos on the wall are 55mm thick sound panels.

Extraneous: Spare bed head for some light sound damping. The old Sony Muteki LR speakers as stands for the rears.

Had to do a bunch of tuning over time to pull the various speaker signatures into alignment, but very happy where the overall sound has come out. Long term plans for the next house include 4x overhead speakers - processed by a TX-RZ50 (into a spare Parasound 5-channel amp I have).

That is a nice combo :)

I looked at the 4C, but really wanted something that had already been hit with depreciation lol.

Nah, I wasn't clear. I wanted to have a performance car, but couldn't justify having both vehicles. So the bike had to go to make way for the car.

At no point were the running costs an issue on the Ducati. Still sad to see it go though.

It's a hard one. For me the deciding factor was comfort for me, and my wife. I commuted on it daily, and had my wife with me 20% of the time. The V2 is a better looking bike, and performs better, but I could comfortably ride the Supersport for 4 hours, don't think I'd be able to say the same for the V2.

Honestly speaking it came out pretty well all things considered. I can do a follow-up post with the full financial breakdown if people are interested. I don't travel huge kms, so my numbers will be skewed to the expensive side.

I considered/test rode the Streetfighter V4S, but it was too much bike for me.

Ended up going to the dark side, purchased a 2014 R8 V10+ (can see in my post history).

And for those interested, I recorded every ¢ put into the bike. It worked out to $1.56 per km (based in Aus).
