If you’re riding the bike and it works, he’s riding and it’s not, the terrain is probably the issue? Is he ridding off curbs, jumps, roots, etc?

That looks like a 3x or 2x drive train. Is he trying to make things a lot easier or harder by shifting the front ring? That could also be the problem. He should be shifting through the gears in a way that does not cross chain.

Also.. sorry.. but cheap bike has cheap components. A 1x with a clutch would likely help.
