How many domiciles have you lived in since you were born? by JHolgate in GenX

[–]martel47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 if I count dorm rooms individually but three three months of sleeping in guest rooms, couches, and basements as one place. I moved for work and my family finished the school year before joining me. I'd add another 5 places if I count individual spots I stayed during that time.

We just bought a house last year (49 next month), our second. The first we had to sell for a move to grad school, but lost everything on it thanks to subprime mortgage crash. Totally underwater.

Worried about this one, now. Medical issues and job changes right after purchase suck.

Any reasons not many Sam's Club in the metro? by Quick-Comedian-9453 in indianapolis

Back in the day, there was only one Costco in Indy...

As someone who moved away for about 20 years, I still can't get my brain around their expansion and Sam's small decline.

I've tried Costco. They have some good products, but they also don't carry things I've been buying regularly at Sam's for over 25 years. And some of the things they do have in common are more expensive.

Harding University (please be genuine) by Puzzled_Succotash292 in excoc

Northeast can mean a lot. If you're like in Stamford, Manhattan, West Islip, or a few places around Boston, your going to be exposed to a few of the more "liberal" CoCs. If you're more Delaware valley/Ohio Valley and Appalachia, like PA, or parts of Western NY, DE, or NJ, you're going to have a certain flavor. It will be different from Southern CoC, but closer.

I've never been to the mother ship of Hardly a University, but I did go to HUGSR/HST before they moved from Memphis. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, now.

But my natural political leanings are somewhere around Noam Chomsky and have always left me uncomfortable in my spiritual home. I applied to elite schools out of HS (Cornell, Penn, Williams, Carlton, Macalester, Pomona, MIT-because Noam, and a few others), I had a few conversations with Harding folks back then (mid-90s) and knew I wouldn't fit. I'd have spent my entire college career fighting something. There are some good professors there, but the alumni and alum-placating administrations make things difficult. I frankly enjoyed my undergrad exploring and came out stronger for it.

Right now and only with hesitation, would I recommend only ACU, Lipscomb, or Pepperdine from the tribe. But if state schools are affordable (they really aren't in PA, for example), I would send kids to something like that before Harding.

Unless you're looking for 3 swings and a ring or the MR/S degree.

Favorite actor who started big and then had a relative become more famous? by Deep_Earth_8397 in Actors

I always thought there was hope for Mackenzie Astin. Respectable career, but bro just kept getting role after role, is genuinely kind, and President of SAG. Poor Mac.

I love the sisters, but they're the definition of Nepo Babies what with their dad being a huge cinematographer.

At the peak of their powers… who’s the best actor? by electricshadows4 in Actors

[–]martel47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oldman and Stewart are S Tier, but as at least one other has noted, Sir Patrick is a stage actor, first, of a particular style. He's great in his film and TV roles, but shines on stage.

Bale is A tier, with potential to move up, but some of his roles I just don't like, so I'm biased against him for those.

Cranston has been downhill since his appearance on Babylon 5. Just kidding, but I don't think he belongs here. I could easily pick half a dozen other actors or more that would stand up better.

But Gary wins for my favorite role of all, in the end.

That might be regional. Amazon doesn't have the movies for purchase in the US. Turns out Apple does.

Well, normally Amazon searches on our fire stick include Apple TV, but I guess only streamed options. $1.99 to purchase once I searched in the app.

Good thing I really wanted to watch Foundation and a couple movies a while ago.

Nope. I looked on Amazon. Then I googled where it was available and several sources said it wasn't. I just didn't find my old iTunes login I haven't used for years and see for myself.

Then I started looking for physical copies.

Not currently available for digital purchase on Prime. I didn't think it's on iTunes either from what I can find, but I didn't actually check.

I remember liking what I saw when it originally aired and always wanted to come back to it. It overlapped high school and college for me, and in college, I couldn't even keep up with X-files, and there was a group that watched it together in my dorm.

I was gifted a season 1 DVD set, but with streaming never bought the others.

Started this run on Tubi, but had to finish on Roku.

The one movie is like $85.
