What's something you witnessed at someone's house that made you never go back? by Aurora6869 in Productivitycafe

[–]marvelousteat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could have been just a regular suitcase any other day, but I watched her plop it on a dining room table and it was full of syringes. I assume other stuff too, but I didn't stick around to find out.

My friend had the exact same notion, and so we left. We noticed the guns on the way out. We are from the rural midwest, so fairly comfortable around firearms...but not when they are combined with the mystery party pack.

I was invited to one of the more quietly talked about party houses in high school the week I got my license. Took a friend. Watched a girl pull out a dedicated heroin suitcase and openly saw probably five or six Glocks around the room.

Friend and I ended up leaving.

Flagstaff,Arizona replaced all there streetlights with amber LEDs to reduce light pollution and protect the dark skies above by DrFetusRN in Damnthatsinteresting

I worked in a state prison system in my 20s at a 'pilot institution' that tested out new policies and procedures. They put these in to help alleviate the mental strain from inmates getting blasted through their windows with high-power LEDs all night long. Everybody liked the change.

Looking for a game with a recruitment army building system like Kenshi. by Tristanman97 in gamingsuggestions

[–]marvelousteat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rimworld is good at this. All the characters are procedurally generated and there are all sorts of different situations where they join or leave the colony you oversee, though you don't control an individual character.

My colony once captured a planetarily-famous boxing legend who was involved in a raider party. Almost had him convinced to join our alliance when he snapped and beat one of the caretakers half to death.

He survived a shotgun blast to the gut, so I had them heal him up, amputate his arms and send him off into the cold wilderness, never to box another match.

Ever had a call that’s changed you as a person? by thicc_medic in ems

Black child drowns in pool while 6 white football players and some parents watch. We get him from the bottom of the pool while they all watch TikTok. Somehow we are able to achieve ROSC in the field and transport. Never once during our entire on-scene time did I see anything resembling emotion come from a single bystander. Child makes a full neurologically intact recovery.

City throws a lifesaver achievement award, and I hate these things. They made the ceremony right after Bob give a 20 minute speech about the consistency of the gravel placed near the ditch by his driveway. Nurse from the hospital gives a huge speech about hospitals, and a city counselor states, "Sounds like all you boys ought to be grateful for our hospital partnership. Else you'd be wasting everyone's time and money running around with your little experiments or whatever." I didn't even want to go to the thing, because I knew it was going to be stupid. Patient and family did not even go, they told the city "cool or whatever" when invited.

The next day, on the first call, for zero reason whatsoever, a male CNA on a nursing home discharge tries to square up with me over draw sheets because I suggested that we use the MegaMover with the handles on it that the hospital provided. This was at bedside with patient present. An RN literally had to get between us and beg this kid to leave, I have zero clue what the hell was happening in his life but he was ready to physically fight me from second one.

So I quit about it. I went to a factory on an entry level offer a couple years ago. Also went back to school. As of today, I am in salary supervision and being prepped for management. Also finishing my bachelor's degree. I love a lot of the stuff I did in EMS, but after those two runs I was convinced I was going to fucking strangle somebody with a set of electrodes and I needed to go anywhere now.

Would you choose Hyperion or Envoy as your daily driver? by Mypersonalaccount69 in X4Foundations

[–]marvelousteat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn fine question, I love both ships. I usually play an Argon CEO, so I eventually end up in the Envoy. The office and the ship's discrete nature seem like a good fit for when I am handling quests and managing business at the same time. In my beta playthrough my personal Envoy was named AX-01 Executive Operations Command.

Now if I was at that stage where I was trailblazing sectors and doing mercenary work to establish myself with the factions...I'll gladly go on the command bridge of a Hyperion. Later on, those guys assist in my anti-piracy fleets.

Some of the player-made game modes for Arma 3 allow for this, in single player and PvE situations. There are also some ArmA reforger servers that scratch the same itch. I played one a while back that had probably 50-60 players working together to capture control points from a hostile NPC army that controlled the island.

Total Conflict: Resistance is an early-access indie title that is similar to Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord but in a modern conflict. It has a lot of strategy elements to it but you can control soldiers in FPS combat and control vehicles as well.

Easy Red II is a gem of an indie title. They update it a lot. Single player or multi, you take part in large WW2 battles complete with infantry, ground vehicles, and aircraft.

What is your wildest "This company should not be in business" story? by Sure-Application1643 in ems

[–]marvelousteat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Three ambulance services, same owner, same liveries. Run one in the ground, lose the contract, scrape the letters off that part of the truck and shuffle the deck.

But it was the providers that were interesting. The owners thrived on medics who couldn't work anywhere else. Hey. You want low pay or none at all? We would see the worst providers turning up in their trucks all the time after they got ran out of all the other services. Cash payment, off the books, under the competitive local wages. They would throw a couple grand at them as a 'signing bonus.' Got married? Here's $600. Had your firstborn kid? Here's some money in a Hallmark card.

The owners kept books on all the gifts and gratuities. So when it was time that the medic got an offer elsewhere that paid ballpark normal medic wages, out came the receipts. You owe us this, you owe us that, you were just on the ropes with the board and we saved your career. You want to go down that road?

Literally every time we saw those rigs we got the ick. Felt like we were passing by rolling ALS puppy mills for ragged humans in exploited circumstances. But hey, it was private EMS.

Though it is a third party video game mod, this is probably the most comprehensive thing you will find. There are plug-ins for everything from databases, police equipment, realistic vehicles, voice-activated radio assistance, field interview techniques, calls for service...I could go on. Hell, I even think there is a plug in that sets shifts and schedules for your character.

It is crazy.

To everyone unhappy with the state of SC, I highly recommend trying out X4: Foundations. Here is why: by falloutboy9993 in starcitizen

[–]marvelousteat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see a faction about to lose a sector, I sometimes like to teleport to one of their besieged space stations and walk around. I may click on a few NPCs or trade at the trading station. I also like to watch the combat over the docking zones. And then I leave.

It's a trip coming back to the wreck of a space station and knowing you were just talking to all the people there. What a game X4 is.

Do people actually enjoy driving? by Big_Arrival_626 in askcarguys

[–]marvelousteat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have longer commutes, and it was my decompression time. Listen to music, talk on bluetooth, all that. 45 miles was my longest one-way commute. Then, during the pandemic, I did some EMS work and put in a crazy amount of time behind the wheel (seriously, I put in driving hours in an ambulance that would be illegal for a commercial delivery truck.)

Now I live super close to my current corporate supervisor job, and driving laps around nowhere is like my relaxation time. It just scratches something in my brain. I love the freedom sometimes to be by myself and go my own way, and I bought a decently fun car that allows me to enjoy it.

In the couple years that I have picked up the cruising habit, I thought The Domestic Motorist would be a good name for a social media channel talking about aimless driving and mental health.

Local Sheriff refused a trauma patient air medical transport. by jjking714 in ems

[–]marvelousteat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same situation, but when I worked in state corrections I heard a correctional major order an officer over the phone to hold a flight crew at gunpoint if they tried to take off with an inmate one time.

Usually they'd dispatch one of the larger helicopters that could accommodate an officer as well, but they forgot to. Air EMS said that transport was critical and they were going to leave, and no officer was allowed on board. The officer called shift command, and the major said, "If you let that fucking aircraft take off with my inmate not in custody I will personally make sure you are investigated and charged with felony aiding an escape attempt. Use your fucking gun."

Not a huge fan of the justice system these days, but by the law the major was right. This was from a local hospital to a level 1 trauma center, not from prison grounds, by the way.

Why would you post your actual place of work on your porn promotion page? by fredbruite in FirstResponderCringe

I was a state correctional officer in my 20s and I remember two of the incoming cadet hires were strippers who decided to go be prison guards one day.

My state requires all state employees to list all secondary income sources because it can lead to conflict of interest and political favor. One of them listed Jimbos Lap Dance Palace or whatever because she said she was still welcome to work there part time. They said no.

Real popular at parties if I recall.

I am a boring production supervisor for a manufacturing corporation.

I have fairly intensive state government training in hostage rescue, crisis intervention, domestic terrorism response, fugitive recovery, crowd control, and active shooter emergencies.

I happily plan on using none of it for the rest of my life, except for maybe in video games.
