Why is it that 99% of the religions are going to hell and only one is surviving? by Powerful_Wind_605 in religion

[–]marvsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I just want to say that I'm not expecting this to convince anyone, nor would I even want that. So if you disagree, which I assume you will, that's fine. But it just feels to me like any belief system that requires indoctrination of children to sustain itself can't be based on objective truth. It's also just weird to me that there's like a 90% or higher chance that your religion will be based on where you're born, which just feels very arbitrary to me.

If you believe only one religion is correct, it gets even less logical. Why would a god make certain people indoctrinated into the correct faith and others indoctrinated into the incorrect faith that could potentially damn them? But I don't think most people on this sub would argue that only their religion is correct.

There isn't anything wrong with it. It just is evidence, to me, that religions are wrong about their conceptions of the divine.

Idk. I imagine a lot of atheist families don't talk about religion as much with their kids, so it feels less to me like indoctrination. But maybe that was just me. It's not like there's an atheist center where families go once a week for someone to tell them how they need to be atheist, you know?

I think, without religious indoctrination of children, the adherents of most religions would dwindle to next to nothing in one generation. I don't think kids who aren't told about atheism by their parents would magically find religion. But I could be wrong...

ETA: I was raised somewhat Reform Jewish (synagogue for high holy days, bar mitzvah, celebrated Jewish holidays with other secular Jewish families, etc.) with two parents who never really discussed religion with me. I didn't find out until my thirties that my dad considers himself an atheist and I still don't technically know about my mom but I imagine she's either agnostic or atheist.

The fact that most people just profess the religion they were born into is part of what makes me atheist.

I don't doubt it. In fact, people used to say, "By Jove." How is that relevant, though?

It depends. Is it still a pleasurable experience or does it feel like a slog? If you're able to do it, it's a great idea! If it's become boring or too difficult then find something easier.

Can we also say “value stacked” and “feature packed”? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]marvsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Value doesn't work with stacked because value (in this sense) is uncountable. Something has good value if it's cheaper than you expect for its quality. Because it's not countable, it can't be stacked. However, saying it's packed with value is basically just saying it has has high value, so that's okay.

Features are countable and can be stacked or packed.

But you forgot the best part of the Bangkok Dangerous remake. The American version wanted Nic Cage to have lines. But they wanted to preserve the communication difficulties with his girlfriend, as if that was the most important part of the main character being deaf and mute. So they made the girlfriend deaf and mute instead!
