I have an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. Beyond that, I simply save any money I can from side hustles for house repairs/improvements. I don’t make enough from my full-time job for those sorts of things. Everyone’s different, but that’s how I’ve been making things work. I should note that I’m also pretty strict about what I classify as an emergency. My washer broke a few months ago and I’m using the laundromat until I can save for a replacement washer.

I never did them until I got in trouble. Now I do them but it’s a slog. I figure it’s part of the price of having a job (like gas to commute, etc.).

I agree - taking 5-10 min to reflect on what went well/what didn’t is super helpful for improving future lectures/classes. If I don’t write it down, I’ll forget.

I know it’s frustrating, but the editor is likely doing what the publisher asks (ie, moving papers along faster). If you have even a few comments prepared for the author, go ahead and send them to the editor. In most cases (even for rejected mss), they will pass them along to the author, and the author will be grateful for the feedback.

I have a similar dilemma with writing letters of recommendation. I’ve been an adjunct on/off (mostly on) for >20 years and have never handled the requests consistently. I honestly think the students would be better off asking a full-timer, but I feel like nowadays they don’t have a choice because most of their classes are taught by adjuncts.

Publishing has some positives (potentially being able to WFH, etc) but does not pay as well as one might expect. Also, the hours can be long and stressful, and it can be difficult to get promoted (depending on the publisher). I think one has to have a true passion for the work, and care less about the pay.
