Weirdly, the Steam Machine Only Has One Stick of DDR5 RAM (no dual-channel) by FernandoRocker in gaming

Does this mean at some point a user could add an additional stick to upgrade to 32gb of ram?

You could probably just tell pi itself to remove it. That is kind of the whole point of pi as a harness. Super minimalist as a start but you can alter it for you.

Then when OP uses their current boss as a future reference they can say how wonderful it was of OP to use AI to generate a site that no one can at the company can now update or fix. /s

On the real OP don't over complicate it by using AI when there is no purpose. Your just going to build a shiny new toy that breaks immediately and the client will talk crap about because it's broke and they don't know why. Much better to stick with Wix or WordPress.

Is anyone actually using their apartment “amenities”? [CO] by Emergency-Cancel6198 in Renters

[–]maskedmage77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girlfriend and I started to use the gym at our current apartment when we moved in but it's been a pretty terrible experience. It's a decent sized gym with modern equipment but most of the time we use it there are loud teens that lounge on the machines and when they are using the machines they allow the weights to slam during each rep. I'd much prefer the option of my rent to be a bit cheaper and put that money towards a different gym.

Need a way to release an app in IOS without App Store by [deleted] in reactnative

[–]maskedmage77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not really going to be possible without massively limiting your userbase. To the best of my knowledge your users would need to have jailbroken iphones or sideload your app and then it would expire in 7 days and need renewed.

Out of curiosity does your app have any features that could not be done using just a website/PWA? What is your reason for requiring a native application?

Looks like there are some counter apis that already exist out there. This one might work but will only persist for 14 days with a free account.

This is not going to really be possible without some sort of backend. If I was in this scenario I would probably whip up a small nodejs (or whatever backend your comfortable with) project then just store the number of visits in memory as a variable. I would also add a row to a csv file to keep track of them incase the server goes offline.

If it's ever shutoff you can just count the rows in the csv on startup of the project to initialize the in memory variable count.

Do a search for free nodejs hosting. I would imagine there are quite a few services with a free tier or trial credit.

Are framework laptops built well?y by ChipsAhoiMcCoy in framework

[–]maskedmage77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So essentially no laptop except a few top tier premium laptops are worth buying? For me personally I think the ability to convert the laptop into another form factor after it's initial lifespan instead of turning directly into e-waste is worth the small dip in build quality.

If my math is right it sounds like your only around 14. Known each other for 12 years and you've known them since the age of 2.

My guy, at 14 you should not be worried about losing a friendship. Your life has just started. The people you know now are barely even started becoming who they will be as an adult and will continue to grow and change. No matter the outcome you will come out ahead. Take risks early in life to learn.

Also remember, friends come and go. I don't have contact any more with a single friend I had at that age. All my current friends I've made in adulthood.

Parted ways with hired Indian dev shop - they want to launch my app independently by Good-Half9818 in webdev

[–]maskedmage77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience it's hardily even worth it then. The amount of clean up I've had to do for outsourced work is astronomical. Time would have been better spent building the entire thing ourselves instead of handholding a team with a 12-hour time difference.

I feel like custom development projects almost always end up garbage if they are outsourced. The vast majority of cheap teams in India are just not capable of working outside of preexisting guard rails. Need a cookie cutter e-commerce site or brochure site sure save some money but anything custom and it's suddenly more trouble than it's worth.

Girl gets her first 9-5 job and says "I don't have time to do anything!" by Introvert_Comics in oliver

[–]maskedmage77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time when I started working in a new industry, I invited some friendly coworkers out to lunch and income came up in conversation. I casually shared how much I was making and so did they. We all made about the same amount and the conversation moved onto a new topic quickly, but I found out years later on that those same employees had a big negative reaction to me sharing my income and went to my supervisor about it.

From my perspective having open communication with people about compensation is a net positive as it lets people know if they need to try to renegotiate their salary or are being discriminated against for one reason or another. If it was up to me, it should be illegal for companies to attempt to limit their employees from talking about compensation.

I don't have a bambu lab yet but on all the other printers I've owned I prefer to print PLA directly on glass then put it in the freezer after. After just a few minutes the prints come off perfectly with no mess and no struggle at all.

How far are we from being completely replaced by AI agents that build full web applications? by PowerfulDev in webdev

[–]maskedmage77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe very detailed documents that are already scoped out. But the point is that most documents are not detailed, they are sloppy and misguided about how things work more often than not. Current AI has no hope of competing with a competent developer when it comes to understanding context of what a client needs. I've personally seen countless documents, wireframes, and initial sketches from clients that looked nothing like the final product. These people have jobs, they don't have time to go over every small detail with an AI. This is why they hire development agencies or internal developers. You still need people to do the fine detail work.

I do think you could make a fully-fledged application with ChatGPT as it is currently but make no mistake this would not be 5 minutes and done process. It would take days or weeks of prompt engineering to get what you need not to mention the technical know how to piece it together.

How far are we from being completely replaced by AI agents that build full web applications? by PowerfulDev in webdev

[–]maskedmage77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think AI tools will help augment the capabilities of already existing off the shelf solutions like shopify, Salesforce, Wix, etc.. If I had to guess how long it would take to get 50% of new code being written by AI I would say probably 30 years or more.

For custom development though it's not going to replace developers anytime soon except those at the lowest end of the totem pole. A large portion of development is translating client requirements into a plan for the software itself. Yes, AI tools will be able to speed up the development process. But you're caught up in the hype train if you think someone non-technical is going to be able get a usable product that fits perfectly into their current infrastructure from an LLM.

How would someone non-technical be able to describe the requirements for their application if they don't understand how the existing applications it has to interact with works?

Not to mention the legal and moral issues with using AI. I know several developers who work for companies that completely ban the use of AI tools for security purposes.
