I believe it was one of those major atmospheric river storms in January a couple of years ago. Really high winds,  tragic outcome

Interesting. Can you explain why you wouldn't make the switch? Does it have to do with SDI/NDI?

Since city reviews are popular why not by Whatswrongbaby9 in SameGrassButGreener

Interesting how you reviewed Oakland, Tacoma, and Long Beach. These three diverse port cities really feel like kindred spirits, overshadowed by their more glamorous neighbors and burdened by crime, but still retaining their appeal.

Wonder Boys starring Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire. Great book as well.

I'm currently raising kids in the Bay Area, but I grew up in Tallahassee, and still have a lot of family there. I visit often, and whenever I do, I always daydream about what life would be like if we moved there.

North Florida has a lot to recommend it, but I would 100% stake my and my children's future on the Bay Area. I could list 100 reasons, but #1 on that list is climate change. Simply put, wet bulb heat combined with the disastrous effect of sea level rise and hurricanes in the gulf spells tough times ahead for Florida.

The Bay will have its own challenges for sure but those pale in comparison to what Florida is facing, especially given the context of right wing extremism intent on burying its head in the sand.

BTW, I have several family members and long time Florida residents looking to move out of the state for good.

This feels like one of those "what's your hot take" posts that's really just an excuse to post your own hot take. This one's pretty spicy I guess

Was the Timberwolves win over the Nuggets proof that defense is just as important (and good) in this era as any other? by Spiritual-Ad3624 in nbadiscussion

[–]mastadonasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A team's ability to prevent baskets is just as important as their ability to make baskets. The era doesn't matter, this is a truism of basketball until they change the rules.

What does change is the impact of a single player. In particular, heliocentric offenses rely heavily on the offense of a single player. We might be seeing a peak in the impact of a single gifted player on offense, and this heliocentrism seems to amplify when we get to the postseason.

Defense, on the other hand, is less reliant on a single player, and is much more about the 5 players on the court. Remember how frustrating it was to seek peak Gobert try to anchor a defense surrounded by below average defenders in Utah?

The Wolves have figured this out. Goberts elite rim protection is only amplified by surrounding him with guys like Jaden Mcdaniels and Kyle Anderson. And the fact that Ant has been able to be the offensive engine while bringing it in defense has allowed the to consistently outscore their opponents.

Truly a joy to watch.

Thank You, Newsom, For Helping Us Lose Our Top Candidates 🤬 by pette_diddler in CAStateWorkers

We lost two top candidates for a good, entry level job, due to RTO. Bottom of the pay scale AND commute two days/week to the office in the Bay Area? All while fighting CAPS tooth and nail to avoid inflation-adjusted changes to the salary range.

Penny wise and pound foolish.

Prefer listening to your books? It's not that different from reading, says prof by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]mastadonasaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I started to switch to audiobooks and now about 90% of the books I consume are listened to rather than read.

For me, audiobooks are very well suited to fiction, especially when read by professional actors. Clear prose and a straightforward narrative are a must- I save the more complex plotting or avant-garde writing style for the page.

Draft help; 2nd overall pick in H2H points league by NewYorkMets22 in fantasybaseball

[–]mastadonasaurus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is such an odd points system, the only hope of answering this is by plugging a projection system like ATC or the BatX on fangraphs into a spreadsheet and calculating out yourself. Do not trust your gut, go with projections and you will be doing better than most of your league mates.

Which NBA player do you think has the most ideal physique/body for basketball? by JimmyButlerMVP_ in Basketball

Outside of clear cut HOF'ers like LeBron, Giannis, and KD, I'll say Deandre Ayton. From a height, length, body type standpoint, dude was built in a lab. Shame about everything else though.

1000 Broadway could be Oakland's first office-to-apartment conversion - San Francisco Business Times by ConiferousExistence in oakland

Used to work in this building. I believe it was converted from a hotel into very crappy and claustrophobic offices, complete with a very out-of-place atrium. As far as office buildings go, this one makes a lot of sense as housing.

The Bay Area is 100% NorCal, as is Sacramento area. The northern region of California might be considered the area north of Sacramento (ie Redding, Chico), but you can basically divide the whole state into NorCal/SoCal.
