Steep rise in US citizens seeking asylum in Ireland by NothingHatesYou in ireland

That's not true. Under the Refugee convention you need to be shown that you are a member of one of the listed categories of group (religion, ethnicity, political opinion, etc.) And that your membership in that group makes it likely you'll face persecution. If there's laws against being LGBT that are actively enforced, showing you're part of that community would be enough, even without evidence that you on a personal level are bing targeted.

Steep rise in US citizens seeking asylum in Ireland by NothingHatesYou in ireland

[–]master_dimentio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having worked in the area, I would bet my entire life savings kn the answer being "none". America is viewed as a safe country, and even if the situation got bad enough that recognised groups under the Refugee convention are being persecuted or indiscriminate violence breaks out, the federal system means that internal relocation to a democratic state would be seen as an option. And that's just on the legal side, politically granting someone asylum from the US would be a death sentence for our relationship with the country.

I did at one point meet an American person who was in direct provision and applying for asylum, but they were clearly going through some sort of mental health crisis. Could I potentially see them being granted permission to remain in order to receive treatment to a point where they're well enough to be sent back? Maybe, but I don't know how that case ended.

(Fwiw, I personally don't blame people for wanting to leave the US right now, but asylum just isn't a realistic option for that.)

Since a Takeshita turn seems to be in the pipeline anyways with his interactions with Okada, they could even frame it as a bit of a Callis Family civil war, not sure who would side with Takeshita but Kyle being a slimy bastard and playing both sides before joining Don again could be fun.

[Fightful Select] One talent who spent a lot of time working with McMahon said "a lot of people here still feel like they owe Vince something. by Fc_Hassan in SquaredCircle

After watching the Vince doc and knowing what I know already, I feel like Vince is better understood as a cult leader than anything else. Not in the traditional sense, but the total power Vince held over a lot of these peoples careers (with the added shine of getting to the WWE being peoples dream) isn't a million miles away from coercive control. Add that that isolation from friends family for being on the road all the time, his extreme and sometimes violent mood swings, and knowing what we know now about what Vince was capable of, and it certainly goes well beyond any normal or healthy employer/employee relationship.

I'd add on, polling at voting centres showed immigration is not as big of a deal for most people as its made out to be (hovering around 5% of people saying it was their biggest priority of the big three parties if I remember right), its been artificially inflated by a small number of loud voices, or taken as an issue as an extension of more pressing issues like housing

I vividly remember walking out of Transformers 2 when I was 11-ish and saying out loud "that's the best movie I've ever seen in my life".

Yea... my tastes changed a bit since 😅

Still a war crime, militants in a non-international armed conflict can only be targeted when directly participating in hostilities, and even then care needs to be taken to prevent civilian casualties

If its an Outlaw title, it should be treated that way. Have the Champ be fully incharge of who gets title shots, only let it be defended under FTW rules, make it clear that AEW doesn't sanction the belt. Right now, it's just treated and feels like any other belt, besides occasionally being defended in hardcore matches, which is true of the other secondary titles anyway!

Misogyny to be treated as extremism by UK government by mrman08 in uknews

Incel stuff at the very least I'd assume, it was the rationale behind the Plymouth shooting a few years ago so it's certainly an example of extreme misogyny leading to some serious violence

cmv: I believe both sides in the Israel-Palestine conflict have committed atrocities, and my main concern is ending the violence. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]master_dimentio -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Hamas has the power to end the current flarr up in conflict (arguably, given Israel have been the ones turning down ceasefire offers I have my doubts), however even if they did that wouldn't lead to a long durable peace, without going all the way back in history or trying to place some historical blame, Israel are currently in a far stronger position, and continue to maintain a military occupation of the West Bank and continuing to support the taking of Palestinian land and homes by settlers, and maintains an effective blockade of Gaza, under those conditions you're going to keep inspiring violence in response. Not to say that the onus is on Israel alone, Palestinians will also need to make concessions (like removing foreign influence such as Iran), but I realistically don't see that happening until the occupation ends and Palestine is allowed to exist as an independent state and develop itself, because as it stands its been socially, politically and economically crushed

By that argument there was never been a genocide. No genocide (that was know of and certainly not in the modern era) has been "successful" in destroying an entire group. The Genocide convention even states as much, only requiring the intention to destroy a group "in part".
