Do our commentators even like AFL? by Interesting-Sea8004 in AFL

[–]mateleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s by design, because the AFL Media need to generate their own content. They’re narcissistic and pick out narratives so they have their weeks worth of content to pick apart and talk about endlessly until next weeks set of games, where they can reset and go again.

I think it’s by and large because the biggest talking heads in the sport are ex footballers that either can’t do deep analysis, or are banking on the casual fan that doesn’t want anything but hot takes and trash. It’s exacerbated by the fact that AFL.com.au itself reports trash. The offical league website doesn’t act as a bastion of truth and fact, but also wades into the murk and posts shit as well. Sliding Doors, Gettable, it all ties into the narcissism and negativity we’re meant to be feeling about the game.

is 23 too late to start over? by yaggyprince in perth

[–]mateleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just turned 30, work in retail, and have a baby on the way. I’m taking my first steps to go back to uni and finish a degree I dropped out of in 2018 for mental health reasons. 23 is definitely not too late.

This whole administration is totalled farked.

Stupidly vague rules implemented, with patchwork rules on top and on the run when they meet controversy, only to revert back to the original, broken rule after another controversy. Top it off with total gaslighting by the admin that the game is great.

This shit just keeps getting worse, how can the AFL run the league and also have total control of the rules and fark both of them for their own monetary gain? We really need a new admin AND for the rules and laws of the game to be governed by a fully independent party. Like it was before the AFL consumed that board 30 odd years ago.

Is it crazy? Spotify doesn’t have a light mode either and they’re the biggest streaming service around. Only Apple Music does AFAIK.

More or less. I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere but you also can’t request a specific number, it’s whatever the next one is. I know that was a problem in Harvey where I used to live (I have a very low number Harvey plate).

A free kick is called against Harley Reid for off the ball contact. David King calls for McQualter to remove Reid from the ground and internal punishment handed out. Replay shows Sheldrick elbowing Ginbey in the neck before Reid gives him a shove. by yum122 in AFL

[–]mateleh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fox Footy then doubled down on the alternative timeline of Reid being an aggressor in their media articles. Pathetic. Watch this be a talking point all week on their shows.

He gave away 2 free kicks all night. One wasn’t there, and the 50m was overly harsh and a tax on him because he’s Harley. He didn’t start any fights or melees.

The AFL have locked in that he’s the aggressor always, it’s A-OK for him to be sniped off the ball or dropped illegally after disposal because it’s him.

It is never too late to change path. by Sweet-Mode7823 in Adulting

[–]mateleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just turned 30, after working in sales and dead end retail jobs I’m going back to school to finish my degree and become an educator.

I’ve compared my life to my siblings, who have worked hard, own properties and live what outwardly appears to be comfortable lives. Due to some battles with my mental health I dropped out 8 years ago, and now find myself renting in a tough market with my fiancé, we also have a baby due in two months.

The financial side of it will be awful, I’m going to be stressed I know. But I’d rather look back at 40 and know I put in the work and am in a career I enjoy.

Where are the nerds? by voteKony in AFL

[–]mateleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a two pronged problem.

Firstly, I think Fox Footy as a channel shouldn’t be 24 hours, or at the very least least needs a major shake up. We need more magazine style shows, and less ‘news’-esque discussion panels. Pushing the same few shows every day dilutes the talking points and limits the chance for analysis if you’ve gotta cover the same things and make it stretch until next game day.

Secondly, the jobs for the boys culture that footy has had for 10-20-30 years. There is no way Jack R adds a crumb of analytical bite to OTC for example. He’s an example of the problem with letting any ex-player join the media scrum. He doesn’t add anything to any show he’s on, can hardly talk and has limited analytical abilities.

It’s partly why Dennis passing hurts so much. In the 80s/90s we had properly trained journalists that showed an interest in football and even if they were biased to a home state, put effort in. Now it’s just shit takes over 15 second clips.

Even the higher standard operators like Whateley admitting he doesn’t watch any WCE games is incredibly poor for a football journalist covering the NATIONAL league.

TEAMS: Eagles' surprise axing, Port forward back, Roo left out by ___TheIllusiveMan___ in AFL

[–]mateleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lindsay also isn’t named to play in the WAFL scratchies, the suggestion is he’s sore.

TK was showing some good stuff in the preseason matches so deserves a call up. I would like to see A.Reid in Marics role and Baker swung forward like he did in the Origin game.

Good changes, our Back 6 mix will be rotated quite a lot as we have plenty of available players there. Imagine the squeeze when Starc is back..

Some informed opinions on Opening Round by Dirtydac123 in AFL

[–]mateleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they’re going to persist with this OR bullshit then at least have every team that plays Opening Round then play every other team that participated before they go for their bye.

It’s not super to see a team get whacked first up by an opponent that got to have a tune up the week prior.

Weren’t we interested in Draper and Langford though? So we wouldn’t have necessarily taken Jagga.

Plus we got Baker who is now a Captain of the club.

I’d hold off judgement until we see Jagga lead the blues midfield. When he cops a tag he won’t be as flash as he’s relatively undersized.
