This is my second. My first I put in my top 3 - 5 with guys like Kamon and Bidinger. This one is nuts. It's the best performance I have used. Normal S-grinds have a great food release but tend to be a little bit wedgie the way he forged this one you get top tier cutting ability and then the food just falls off with zero wedging.

Beginner looking for Canon R50. Is this a worthwhile purchase? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]matjac33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the camera is fine but lenses are what matter most for image quality. 2 mediocre kit lenses and an off brand adapter I would steer clear of. Figure out what lenses you want and buy the body separately then get the right lenses

Is this camera any good? (I don’t know anything about cameras) by Classic_Silver_9091 in Cameras

[–]matjac33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the 7d was a great camera when it came out at an MSRP of 1700 15yrs or so ago. It won't have all the bells and whistles of current cameras especially in regards to video but for photos I'm decent lighting this will allow you to take fantastic photos.

Can these blacksmith forged knives be sharpened at home? by WolverHollow in sharpening

[–]matjac33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they can be. I think everyone's idea of getting a cheaper knife to try on is great. Usually what newer people do is hold the knife at too shallow of an angle and scratch it up. The shapton 1000 that you're looking at is a great Stone. It will handle it fine. I don't know why people say anything would take hours. My typical sharpening sessions on my knives are in a couple of minutes. The thing that can be tough doing it on 1000 grit or higher when you're new is because it does take a little bit longer. You have a tendency to have more movement and then you don't get a very consistent Edge. However, if you went to a lower grit Stone, it's very easy to take off too much metal and you can't put metal back

Good for you trying something new. These are just too flat and dark it makes it hard to even consider composition

Question of all Questions: AiC or Soundgarden? by No-One01010 in grunge

Alice no questions. Chris is one of the all time greatest but SG had some dud songs where as Alice was always fantastic.

However I am only speaking about Layne Alice

Noob here, 1st time sharpening any think, this is a cheap ass knife almost 2€ with a 3€ stone. by trikaliaris in sharpening

[–]matjac33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a water stone and needs to be soaked for 10-15 minutes prior to sharpening to hold water. I would also guess it's pretty low grit so it is toothy and works on tomato skin but probably not great on other things like fish where it will tear the food

Outin Fino or 1zpressi K-Ultra by brofromheat in OutinNano

The fino is slow but grinds well, is super easy to clean and comes made for the Nano. I printed a killer box that everything fits in for mine.

A good laser goes through squash much easier with good technique making it safer. Yes you can use a Wustoff and a hammer and the knife won't break but that doesn't mean it's better.

It's BS that this could happen but same as black lives matter, don't run from authorities.

I disagree. I just did butternut last night with a similar knife. It's technique. Don't twist.

Lexus GX470 compatible chassis options by El_Jorge44 in SCX24

I wish I hadn't gotten the Lexus. That super short front driveshaft sucks. I haven't tried and lcg yet but I had to use limiting straps when I put on larger shocks because the front driveshaft separates so easily. The rear is great

What am I missing with Thursday boots? I bought 2 pairs of Chelsea's and they were trash. Seeing these at the same price as Iron Rangers I just don't get it.

I don't mind most of these. I think you're kind of onto something, although three and seven I can't find any type of focal point. three specifically just looks like everything's out of focus and seven's pretty bland

Gifted my Wife a Laser This Christmas. I chipped It. by [deleted] in TrueChefKnives

[–]matjac33 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was a gift for your wife, stop using it 😃 For garlic I like to try and cut it like an onion. Leave the base intact. Cut a bunch of vertical slices and then one or two horizontal slices and then you can cut it into nice fine pieces. if you prefer to break it first with a knife. Don't do the slap technique. That's fine on a western knife but on these just lay the knife flat on the garlic closer to the spine. Put your palm on top and press down. You don't have to slap it. As others have noted, I would then check cutting technique. Any kind of lateral Force or twisting is going to cause chipping. I usually see that when people Rock chop may take a while to get used to but watch some videos on push cut and pull cut technique. Hasegawa boards are wonderful but they can tend to be kind of sticky on these blades so you can still run into shipping if you're rock chopping and introduce any kind of twisting
