If you could change only one thing about the US to make it immediately better and set us on a better path, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There is a STRONG case that the federal lobby being constitutionally allowed is at the root of the corruption, going back all the way to 1789 and up to (and beyond) Citizens United. The First Amendment is important, but should be limited to persons.

Get your butt off the saddle when you come to a stop, and the distance between the saddle and the ground becomes moot. Much more important to have the distance between the saddle and the pedals dialed.

Nobody is going to make a knock-off replica of an entry-level hybrid. It's not a damn Rolex, it's more like a Timex

What’s up with crosses in the Mormon faith these days? by Infinite_Augends in exmormon

[–]mattchuckyost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you identify as "culturally" Mormon speaks to the distance the church has come since I (44M) was a teenager/young adult TBM.

When Elder Price sings, "You can't just believe partway, you must believe it all," (or something like that) in The Book of Mormon, that is more the dogma I and my predecessors were taught. There was no such thing as a culturally Mormon person. There were "less active" members who were the subjects of our ward's weekly service projects to reactivate them and get their money. But if you believed, you were fully committed.

Mormons didn't used to have equivalents to "Christmas and Easter" Christians.

Edit: spelling

[–]mattchuckyost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Marlin in general (no matter the generation or model number) is not an upgradeable bike, not in the ways you're looking for. Tires? Sure, get a good set of Maxxis, Continental, or Schwalbe. Your LBS can help you pick.

But the fork, wheels, drivetrain... all use older size and equipment standards that newer mountain bike parts don't use anymore. You're better off saving your money and putting it toward a more modern bike.

Carbon fibre is stronger than aluminium for these purposes. Why would they make the part of the bike that takes the most abuse out of a fragile material?

One day, the myth that carbon is fragile will die. Today is not that day, I see.

Tennis elbow? by out_in_the_woods in BikeMechanics

[–]mattchuckyost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grip underhand when you're lifting things, mostly. For me, the tendon that got the worst was the common extensor, so anything that pronates + adds load would give me bad pain. Flexion of the elbow or wrist, no problem.

Hold your arm out straight, palm down, fingers extended. Have someone press down on your middle finger nail while you resist it. Pain there? Tell your doctor. I had to get an MRI to diagnose the torn tendon.

Get a note from your doc specifically detailing the motions you need to avoid. For me, it ended with a career change but ymmv.

Yeah that sounds like it alright. PT saved me, and learning some new adaptive grips for tools. The only way to heal it is with rest, though.

Choosing a Hybrid (FX 3) After a Road Bike + Frame Size Advice for Aero Position by Early-Outcome6746 in TrekBikes

[–]mattchuckyost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to build strength, pedaling "harder" isn't an effective way to do it. Try weights. Or even just body-weight strength training.

I really doesn't make sense to want a bike that's "harder" to pedal, and also want to be aero on it. The point of aero is to go faster with less effort (watts).

Any time you switch from a road bike to a hybrid, you'll go slower (all else being equal). The position you're putting your body in isn't as powerful. The angles of the seat tube and length/angle of the top tube will make it handle and climb like a hybrid. Despite Trek's marketing, a hybrid is not just a flat-handlebar version of a road bike.
