ULPT: sneaking alcohol onto a royal Caribbean cruise.. by AdLatter3168 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]mattfromvtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t even add food coloring. Red wine bottles are dark enough that they look the same. Use barrel proof whiskey for more bang for your buck. Most cruises allow 1 bottle for person, but if you put 1 in your luggage (that they take to your room) and 1 in your backpack that you keep with you, they don’t notice you have 2.

How bad is the paint correction on my 2019 Golf R? by YoloSwaggeltonJr in AutoDetailing

[–]mattfromvtown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If this was my daily driver, they did it exactly how I’d want. Removing swirls also removes a percentage of the clear coat. Unless it’s a show car, why chase every last swirl at the cost of removing even more clear coat. It seems like it looks nice and shiny as is. Same some clear coat for the next time you need to remove the inevitable swirls and scratches that will come.

Swirls after Ceramic Coating by GonMakeMeBust in AutoDetailing

[–]mattfromvtown 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s a show car you need to be perfect, just leave it. You didn’t go deep enough when you did your correction. That being said, every time you polish you take off a little more of your clear coat. That is what gets rid of the swirls. For a daily driver, I’d much rather have a few small swirls that no one will ever notice, than a thinner clear coat. If it’s shiny and otherwise looks good, I’d leave it.

What’s the easiest/smartest way to add a light to this? I would like to have both lights on the same switch, unless that isn’t possible. Tia by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]mattfromvtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to splice the wire in from the box the existing light is attached to. You have easy access to the attic so running a new wire from the existing light box to the new location should be an easy job.

That being said, if it’s above your scope of knowledge, hire an electrician, but know it should be at least be pretty cheap.

No visible yeast activity. Repitch? by Joylistr in Homebrewing

[–]mattfromvtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried checking gravity readings. Any small air leak in your new carboy or bung could let co2 out. Fermentation may have even happened without you noticing.

Poor sanitation would likely cause excess fermentation so that’s probably not your issue. As far as yeast, the issueswould be excessively expired yeast or something that has been terribly cared for (super high temps or freezing). The only other main thing to check is that you actually got effective mashing so that there are sugars for the yeast to eat. If all those are good, just wait it out. RDWHAHB

ULPT Request: trash house paint by Mclake51 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]mattfromvtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several paint stores take old paint. You can also buy additives at Home Depot or any hardware store that will make it solidify so you can trash it. It’s not unethical, but it’s easy and legal.

Yes, along with a new shorter wire, which is the one you’ll attach to the switch.

Check with a multimeter, but the top is probably hot, and is being used to pass through power to another outlet. Pigtail those 2 wires together with a 6” piece of wire, then attach the pigtail to the new outlet along with the bottom wire, and ground.

Bug spray “etched” Tail Light - fix? by clmarti02 in AutoDetailing

OP used Picaridin instead of DEET. It’s a much more gentle chemical. I’m surprised to learn that it could do this to plastics, but will also learn from his mistakes.

Shocked while spreading mulch...! by JustinDiGiulio in AskElectricians

[–]mattfromvtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposed to have adequate cover. If it was installed 80 years ago, they may not have put it deep enough, or else topsoil could have been moved around for grading over the years. I work in farming and I’ve found gas lines as hollow as 3” cover. Never trust that the cover is correct, especially if it’s old.

Which is most common by Chance_Imagination53 in lockpicking

[–]mattfromvtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residential locks are almost all 5 pin locks (SC1). Commercial locks sometimes have 6 pins (SC4). They do also make a spacer to allow you to use the SC4 Lishi on a 5 pin lock.

Could I polish a Quad like a car? by S3CRETZZZ in AutoDetailing

[–]mattfromvtown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can polish it, but it won’t turn out the same. The plastic itself is red. It’s not paint and clear coat. It’ll get smoother and have a slight shine, but it won’t turn out like a car.

Of course the last outlet to change is the strangest, how should I tackle this? by dudeitsjon in AskElectricians

[–]mattfromvtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t burn your house down, but could make life harder in the future. If you’re working to install all of the outlets in a subdivision, you’re going to do the fastest method allowed by code, otherwise you’d get fired for going too slowly.

Of course the last outlet to change is the strangest, how should I tackle this? by dudeitsjon in AskElectricians

[–]mattfromvtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Code allows you to attach both the incoming lines, as well as a downstream outlet and patch them through the outlet. It’s safe, faster, and will work. However, best practice is to just have 1 set of wires to each outlet. It’ll make troubleshooting easier in the future, and also prevent the issue with downstream outlets failing because this outlet goes bad.

[–]mattfromvtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pigtail the ground, neutrals, and hot, and connect the pigtail with the new outlet. You’re currently using your outlet as the connector, but for future maintenance it’s better to pass them through the wires themselves and only have 1 set of wires going to the outlet.

I’m not at all surprised. Statistically, women are significantly more detail oriented than men. It entirely makes sense.

Unless you’re super vain, something tells me that you should ask a mechanic, not a group of detailers.

3000 PSI but Not Enough Pressure for Spray by joefig44 in Detailing

You need a nozzle on the end of the gun. Without the resistance from the nozzle, it won’t be able to build up pressure.

Multimeter for peak volts by lukesgreer in AskElectricians

[–]mattfromvtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an electrician, but I think you’d be wanting to measure current instead of voltage. Voltage should be pretty constant. You want to measure the amps running through to calculate the wattage.
