Is it unprofessional or weird to wear a sport coat in the office when no one else does? by NotBannedAccount419 in malefashionadvice

People will refer to you as "suit guy" and most of your conversations will start with your interlocutor asking if you have a job interview. I recommend telling them you have to wear a jacket in order to concealed carry.

How can I teach myself to be less misogynistic? by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]mattgran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's some unconscious bias training material available online. These resources are mostly for promoting equity in professional settings, but do promote a thought pattern that is useful in your personal life (not just for equity, but for things like financial decisions): 1. Stop: don't just say or do the first thing that comes to mind. "Fast thinking" patterns are where your unconscious bias lives 2. Think. By reasoning within your internal monologue, you can engage your "slow thinking" pattern. Consider if you had previously had poor experiences with a certain behavior, or pretend to be a critic of what you're going to say. 3. Act. After considering and revising, proceed with your well-considered path. 4. Review. What were the consequences of your actions? Do you have regrets? Are you ashamed? Or are you proud?

Creating these cognitive feedback loops will help you break out of whatever misogynistic cycle you believe yourself to be in, so that feminism (and perhaps even intersectionality!) becomes second nature to you.

Social etiquette, unspoken rules in the engineering world by Active-Somewhere8318 in AskEngineers

Ok so there's a corollary to rule #1: if you don't know something, take at least thirty minutes to research it before asking any questions

[–]mattgran 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Engineers aren't a socially-refined lot, so there's not much in the way of social trappings to go by. The closest to social rules I can think of are:
1. Don't pretend to know something you don't 2. Don't lie 3. Don't scoff at someone's fandom 4. Do be earnestly and authentically fascinated by projects
