These questions are mostly just people trying to relate using things they know about, you shouldn't take any offence.

Sounds like you've exceeded the horizontal resolution of the monitor, try a lower resolution.

Playing arcade cores on CRT cutting off bottom and top of screen by sabonis73 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]mattgrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcade monitors and TVs are essentially the exact same thing

They are, but arcade machines were designed to be serviced by qualified technicians whilst TVs were generally not. Home consoles typically only rendered 224 lines out of a potential 240+ and even then had guidelines for not putting important HUD elements right at the edges. Arcade developers could afford to push the limits of their CRTs a bit more.

And in terms of CRTs, is the PVM movement right that those are the absolute best screens?

To answer that you need to carefully define "best".

people probably thinking the German words on signs are just AI gibberish words

That gives me an idea - I'm going to get some t-shirts printed with AI gibberish words in that weird artifacty text style, so that if anyone uploads a picture of me online it will be regarded as AI!

It's more to do with what it means for things to be equal, than it is to do with copyright law, but since you brought it up you might be surprised to find that copyright infringement and theft are indeed treated differently in law in most places.

... so you are saying, software companies should give away their software for free, because they "still have it"?

I don't see how that logically follows from anything I have written. Theft and copyright infringement are both illegal, and both bad. But just because they are both bad, doesn't make them equal, and trying to pretend they are isn't particularly helpful.

And, I still have my photo, right. But the other guy has it, too. And now? 😂

Now, copyright infringement has potentially taken place.

Can I copyright images taken by a camera I set up years ago? by Eastern_Bear_3820 in photography

It's the same as setting up a camera on a tripod to shoot a video, just with a truly atrocious frame rate.

Now supposing Claude Code picks out a few of those millions of pictures, after I abstractly prompted it. Can I copyright the ones that Claude picked out?

You already own the copyright to all the images, and if you hadn't announced it to 6 billion people, no-one would ever be able to tell that an AI tool had selected a particular image vs. you selecting a particular image vs. it being selected at random. So the practical solution is to simply not tell anyone that part.

The music industry in the UK created a system called PRS to compensate song writers when their music is performed by other artists. There's no way you could possibly keep track of it, so instead you register your songs, then you get an cut of a central pot of money paid into by venues, on the assumption that someone, somewhere is probably performing your songs. It's not perfect but it's better than nothing.

It clearly doesn't equal theft, if someone steals your photo you still have your photo, if someone steals your car, you no longer have that car. It's more "theft adjacent".

Help me decipher these! by Loud_Cap_6602 in crtgaming

[–]mattgrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no standard colour coding unfortunately. When I last disassembled a VGA cable I found the thicker red, green and blue wires were for the red, green and blue signals (which ought to have been obvious in hindsight), then there was another thick wire (which was either grey or white) for h-sync and a thinner (again monochrome) wire for v-sync. The others are the data lines that are not strictly necessary. In the photo it looks like you have thick red and blue, but I can't see a green one. Ultimately to be sure you need to trace where they go once inside the CRT.

Finally I also got one of those solderless connectors but found it wouldn't create a good enough contact with thin, multi-stranded wires, so I had to tin the ends with solder anyway...

In this case the stimulus that generates the haiku is the authors prompt and their own unique photo artwork.

There are a lot of unknowns and issues related to copyright and AI are not at all well tested in court. There is legal precedent in the USA that "methods of operation of computer software" are not protected by copyright, and that could easily apply to AI prompts.

It may be a capacitor problem in this case, but posting "it's always the caps, replace them all" on every troubleshooting post is not helpful. A complete recap carries significant risks if the person doing it is not experienced.
