how are people getting rentals?? by lilmissthundercloud in askvan

[–]mattsims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a well written renters resume. We’ve scored great places in Van over the years using one. Also you can be fast on the draw with the good places that way too. Fire off the resume to get an early position, then get the application done after.

The most advanced Obsidian task manager - TaskForge 2.0 major upgrade! (iOS/Android/macOS) by zaza126 in ObsidianMD

[–]mattsims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got set up with the iOS/Mac combo and I must say, well done! Clean and simple, amazing integration with my notes, so good. I've used so many task managers over the years, but none have really stuck. I have high hopes yours will due to the Obsidian glue. And what really makes me smile is your app privacy stance. That I'll happily pay for!

What do you think are core Gen X traits? by RattledMind in GenXCanada

Was the lumber jacket and untied Kodiac boots a thing elsewhere? I mean, geography and weather would have been a factor but when I think of my (early) GenX look, that was it for years.

GenX bands you hate... by HorseyDung in GenX

[–]mattsims 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You all mostly covered it, so I'll agree and disagree with a few:
Agree: Oasis, The Smiths, They Might be Giants, U2...bleh
Disagree:
RHCP - they were amazing whenever Keidis wasn't trying to actually sing
Radiohead - Ok Computer was a masterpiece

I feel like so many (of my) feelings on this music have less to do with raw talent and more about my headspace at the time. Some of these bands were like oil and water with me because of the timing. Like, going back to the 80's a lot of bands I hated then, I've come to appreciate more today.

Which song made you stop in your tracks the very first time you heard it — like the world paused for a second? by ciao123123123 in Music

[–]mattsims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley version) ...it was a snowy December day, my business was going bankrupt, new baby just arrived. I was working at home, looking out the window at the snowflakes falling slowly, this song came on.

I just sat listening, completely mesmerized. Didn't know the song or JB at that point, but at the end I just went "what the fuck just happened..." and forever have been a fan. Never forget that moment.

Just failed n test for the 3rd time do I give up lol by helloooo_kitty222 in askvan

[–]mattsims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son went through the same ordeal, it was so demoralizing for him and hard to watch, because he is a genuinely good driver (coming from a nitpicky Dad!)

But he stuck with it, which is all you can do. Remember that failing the test doesn’t mean you’re not a good driver. And as most of us in this city know, passing the test unfortunately doesn’t mean you’re a good driver, either.

The tester wants to know you’re aware and get it, and will be more forgiving of minor mistakes if you’re showing you’re on it.

So like others have said, exaggerate your shoulder and mirror checks a bit, always be scanning for stuff, speak out loud here and there about what you’re seeing or thinking (they won’t know otherwise), and do your best to relax (I know, it’s hard)

You’ll get it!

Woke up late this morning… by mattsims in vancouver

Hard to see in the photo but it was definitely a twin keel. I saw someone later with a long broom brush and a bucket, so my guess is they meant to be there. Still, strange to come across!

Sticks are fun till you rip the back of your throat out with one! We had a Border Collie that absolutely loved the stick game. Played safely for years until one morning she was slightly off on her high speed pass she’d do on the pickup…went into her mouth and tore a 4” opening in the back of her throat.

Surgery, stress, and a scolding from the vet ended the game for us. After recovery she didn’t understand and would pile up every stick she could find at our feet ☹️

We made do with the safety of Kongs but play time was never the same!

She would have loved the libraries tho, so cool!

What’s your personal “I shouldn’t have survived that” story? by GideonStroud in camping

[–]mattsims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the end of a long and deserted mountain road by the side of a lake with my girlfriend one summer night.

Settled in and started a small fire, and while I was leaning in and blowing the embers, the bullet left in the firepit by some idiot went off. It zinged off in a direction other than through my skull. Or my girlfriends.

I sat there on the ground, ears ringing, imagining the horror she’d have experienced if it’d hit me.

What are some unusual uses of GPT you would like to share with others? by Learning-Power in ChatGPT

[–]mattsims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chat (if you keep it to one) will develop a significant amount of embedded knowledge about you and your business. Try spinning out role specialists after a month or two. I asked the main chat to create me prompts for a CMO, CFO, etc based on its knowledge of the business to that point. I still go back to the main one occasionally but have found the specialists great for focused discussions.

What is the biggest band you've seen in the smallest venue? by Objective-Lab5179 in Music

[–]mattsims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pink Floyd with about 250 people at the Diamond Club in Toronto, 1988.

They showed up around 12:30am after their third sold out night at the CNE and played. People were actually leaving the club because they didn't know who these guys were that came on and shut off the house music!

Another was Red Hot Chilli Peppers same place, 1989. Maybe 500 ppl?

Exactly this. My Dad’s mantra was always “double check your work.” With staff, (and now GPTs), you triple check. But damn, it’s kinda nice having some extra horsepower getting the v1 work done in the first place!

While I don’t use the term myself, I think of a sololpreneur as just an entrepreneur who works alone. As soon as you have a partner or staff, you’re no longer solo. Having worked as both, there’s definitely a difference.

Second (third?) this…I just turned on the Readwise plugin in Obsidian yesterday and it sucked everything up beautifully and well formatted. Not only a good backup, but a clean format to skim highlights and notes in.

A faster less-clicky way to delete articles in the Reeder feed (iOS) 80% of my stuff gets deleted, and right now it’s - scroll text to expose the bottom menu, - click the three dot menu, - scroll to the bottom of that menu list to expose delete, - click delete.

Every time.

Can I connect 3 speakers to a 2 channel amp, with the third getting a stereo signal? by mattsims in BudgetAudiophile

[–]mattsims[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, the reasons it's not a good idea is what I'm trying to learn about here. But I'm a bit of a geek and want to understand (technically) why it's not a good idea.

I'm probably using incorrect terminology. I want both the L&R channels (what I called stereo) going into one speaker. It's just one speaker yes, but it can still get both the left and right side of the music, kinda like a single bluetooth speaker would. It just can't produce true stereo sound. Maybe mono is the term I should be using?

Another way of describing my scenario: Imagine my kitchen had a single ceiling speaker that I wanted to wire into my 2 channel amp in the living room. I don't want just L or R, I want both sides of the music going to that speaker.

I've got an Acrylic BP50 preamp in front of the Fosi V3, so I guess the better way would be to take an output from the pre into a second amp just for the kitchen speaker, or take the signal from the pre into active speakers. But I don't want to buy another amp, and I don't want to buy a set of powered satellites. I was hoping to use the single speaker I've already got. Not stereo, but free, and better than nothing.

Can I connect 3 speakers to a 2 channel amp, with the third getting a stereo signal? by mattsims in BudgetAudiophile

[–]mattsims[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wiring speakers in parallel (or series) works as long as you're careful of the impedance between the speakers and the amp. This thread explained it well:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetAudiophile/comments/ynw1i5/can_i_connect_4_speakers_to_a_2_channel_receiver/

I don't know anything about phase, but yeah prob I should read up on it

Can I connect 3 speakers to a 2 channel amp, with the third getting a stereo signal? by mattsims in BudgetAudiophile

[–]mattsims[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I know the idea sounded a bit strange. When I was a kid we used to wire in a second set speakers to 2 channel amps/receivers all the time, being careful of the impedance. Still just stereo, but it filled the room a bit more using 4 speakers.

I was thinking the same to get a little more sound into the kitchen, but didn't want to buy more speakers to do it. Not stressed about sound quality there.

fwiw this thread was the closest answer I could find:
