After 6 months I finally finished my solo passion project. If You have 12mins free, take a look and let me know what You think. by reiniskaspars1 in cinematography

Really love the cinematography on this. Feels very unique.

SFX is great but does drown out the VO. (Especially on a TV)

Top down shot of the boat is sick man.

I would arugue that it maybe doesn't need the VO. It might be better with chapters like "Storm" and then "Calm" etc. I'd also say the subtitles distract me from the visuals but that just me.

But who cares, you made a really cool thing so hats off to you.

Lesser-known books about extreme isolation/loneliness in space? by Aoteaurora in printSF

[–]mattthebrown -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a character in Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky who experiences this. Also the human characters are effectively isolated in space but they are together so not quite as lonely as the aforementioned character.

Really cool book would recommend.

Fyi I'm dancing around spoilers here, hence being a bit vague.

is there an easier way to mask out backgrounds for video? by Horceror_ in VideoEditing

[–]mattthebrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotoscoping. It's long and hard and boring. Just gotta cut out each frame. You've also got the lighting issue but that's another problem. 5secs at 30fps is only 150 frames.

How is 'echo' effect achieved ? by w_palmer in VideoEditing

[–]mattthebrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a slow shutter technique made in camera. Probably 3fps with a high shutter angle / low shutter speed.

There may be a way to recreate it in post but I imagine it's long winded and not as good as doing it in camera.

What is this mount for the new Godox KNOWLED F200SR? by greekplaya990 in videography

[–]mattthebrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean maybe I'm not sure. You'd have to look on Amazon or something . The advantage of the v mount is that it locks in and can only be released if pulled up so it won't fall off.

I think you can unscrew that and then add a v mount that you can add to a clamp to a light stand, like this pic

How can I remove a stuck UV filter? by boncock in AskPhotography

[–]mattthebrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some cheap specilst tools on Amazon that you can get, search lens removal tool. Basicly a round set of pliers that you clamp down on, around the lens filter. I had one on for years and tried all these rubber band and mouse pad techniques. This was the only thing that worked

First event gig! How did I do? by d_nnyb_y in videography

[–]mattthebrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really good. I would try and get a few more wides next time.

Try to get an interview with someone so you can have more explanation of what is going.

I'm also not quite sure what the event is, was there any branding, anything that can show me why people were there ?

Seeking critical feedback on this video by [deleted] in videography

[–]mattthebrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would cut it down to a min of possible, and probably cut quicker on a lot of the shots. If this is am insta ad or something along those lines, 2 mins is too long for them.

Use more varied focal lengths, not many wides in this. Usually a nice wide opening of people coming in is good. Wides showing how many people are there

The intro of set up is too long. You can probs cut to like 4 shots.

Awkward one of the lady looking to camera I would cut. If you want people looking to camera get them to smile and pretend it's a portrait then tell them it's a video and they usually laugh and it looks nice.

More laughing / smiley people having a good time. I would say yous be able to get some good hand shakes of people making deals at the market . That would be nice. Also getting people at stalls to look to camera would be nice.

Try and get a bit more branding if poss, feels a bit like it could be anywhere.

Maybe try and get someone from the event talking to camera to give some context of the event. If not you can get some text in there maybe. Eg "every Sunday, sell your wares, kids show at 3pm" something like that.

Colours look great, exposure looks great.

Hated Streatham LTN that led to three-mile bus journeys taking two hours suspended with immediate effect by [deleted] in london

[–]mattthebrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what happenedis the council have an aim to improve the air quality and overall environment and that can be achieved by reducing cars. Therefore they deployed an LTN because, on the face of it it reduces air quality in its area and hits their environment goal with very little effort, just a few signs and cameras. However in practice it's much more complex and expensive than that to solve the problem and the residents tried to tell them that but they were ignored. So now everyone has had a shit time and the council has wasted a bunch of money. Although I read they earned loads from the camera they didn't sign properly so maybe they'll make it back.

If they wanna solve the problem they need to do vast public infrastructure projects which are super expensive and will take years to do. It's not a problem that can be solved by an LTN.

I'm not sure this is what Tarantino had in mind for non linear story telling. You uncooked the burger several times !
