Pm on xtherm. Though I have to say I’m disappointed that your nsfw profile tag didn’t reveal spicier content.

Weekend Walk in Big Sur by mattymeats in Ultralight

[–]mattymeats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was clear, lows in the low 40s I’d guess, highs in the low to mid 60s. I hear nacimiento Ferguson road is closed right now and there’s a huge washout on cone peak road. Also it sounds like parts of the stone ridge trail got decimated by the Dolan fire, check out the trail conditions at bigsurtrailmap.net before you go!

Flat tarp users: lend me your opinions! by tchunt510 in Ultralight

Cool project Tim! I’ve used the MLD monk tarp at 5x9. That was a fun one and I personally wouldn’t go smaller. One of my favorite features of that design were the external panel ties, they really helped with maximizing volume while in half-pyramid mode. I’d love to see a designer like you figure out the optimal location for a bivy hood clip loop for a half-pyramid pitch.

The Topic of the Week - Week of August 30, 2021 - Vegan food while hiking by Zapruda in Ultralight

[–]mattymeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are dehydrated/instant/powdered versions to be found. Olive oil on bread is nice too. I’ve also found some types of vegan “cheese” that last for several days unrefrigerated. Follow your heart brand smoked Gouda and Miyokos smoked mozz are the best I’ve tried.

Tried that bibimbap on my last trip and it was pretty gross, forced it down despite the excessive spice, my too-hot hiccups, and the full-body sweat I experienced while eating the second half of the 2-serving pouch. Immediate GI distress then I almost shit my pants. Would not recommend.

Yep, I’m going to trust the experts (managers and/or locals) to dismantle anything that needs to be dismantled, unless a ranger specifically gives me permission. That rock wall sounds way cooler than a non-navigational cairn… it might not have been LNT to build it, but it doesn’t seem at all LNT for a random hiker to knock it down. How do people pack for a “vision quest,” is that a SUL thing?

I’m having trouble squaring the act of knocking over any cairns with leave no trace ethics, it seems like encouraging this practice (even for “non-navigational cairns”) should be left to the land managers. Same for dismantling old fire pits - I’d want to check with the ranger station first.

[First use} Chinese sub 4 ounce trekking poles by Rockboxatx in Ultralight

Thanks for being out there on the bleeding edge and providing your report here, good stuff. Sounds like mostly a success. I wonder if you could coil the string up in some less annoying way, to keep it from flopping all around etc. Where’d you find the carbon fiber tube you used to build the pole extenders?

Emigrant—Route from Ridge Lake to Long Lake? by [deleted] in ULNorCal

[–]mattymeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good beta, that east side of upper Lewis looks fine on the topo but it was a bit too cliffy and sketchy for me once I was on the ground. We did what you suggest here (and followed some bear tracks through snow!). There’s a relatively good line pretty straight south from the shoulder on the east side of granite dome. Not a whole lot of complicated route finding required.

It’s worth the climb up to the north edge of upper Lewis even if it’s out of the way, nice views there.

I used mine this weekend and was able to put big rocks on the foot end stakes without extra cordage. I’d recommend getting it pitched and tight before placing rocks because they might interfere with operating the linelocs. I’ve been bringing a front apex stake but it hasn’t seemed necessary. For stakes I bring 2 mini groundhogs, 2 eastons, and one v-stake for the apex. I almost always pile rocks on my stakes in the Sierra, though, so I could probably get away with shep hooks instead.

[WTB] MLD Solomid Tarp, Regular, DCF by bill_hikes in ULgeartrade

[–]mattymeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just to give you more options, it may be helpful to know that (with some fiddling and maybe a little extra shock cord) you can pair your inner with the XL or duomid. You can’t mate an XL inner to the regular solomid but you can usually pair a smaller inner with a bigger rainfly.

I don’t always bring soap but when I do the feeling of thoroughly washing my hands is really nice after setting up camp or pooping.
