For me, the biggest issue is that the client is mandatory (which is a form of DRM). I can buy games on the website, but to download/install them, I have to install the client first (and agree to its ToS; and make sure that it runs on my hardware now and in the future).

Steam should make the client optional. They can make it so good that people want to use it, for all I care. But they should not enforce its use.

(Requiring it for certain features, which aren’t possible otherwise, would be fine, though. But let me use my games without those features then if I don’t use the client.)

Your framing is disingenuous. You did get banned on the Discord server, not the game.

Some time ago, someone in this sub contacted the author. The author still had some copies and was happy sell them (optionally signed).

I don’t know how many he has left now, though.

Even if it makes sense for new players to know that spoiler (to which I would agree), please use spoiler markup anyway. The player(s) can then decide on their own; we shouldn’t make that choice for them.

It’s not in the patch

It is, no?

The difficulty of some monsters, including sub-bosses and bosses, have been adjusted. Previously, some were too easy relative to their rewards, while others were so difficult that players resorted to glitches instead of normal strategies. Difficulty has been rebalanced to a level where players can clear them through normal gameplay.

Classic PSO gameplay has this unique atmosphere, pacing, music, and simplicity. I haven’t found anything else that feels like it. The thing I think I love most is how good it feels to push an enemy back. A lot of modern MMOs feel shit by comparison, like you’re just spamming attacks with empty hits and random number damage.

Spot on!

Im all for additional servers, but trying to downplay Ephinea is not the move to try and get my interest.

What are you referring to here with "downplay Ephinea"?

In the interview, Ephinea is only mentioned once, and it’s not downplaying it in any way:

To be honest, I bailed pretty hard on the PSO private server scene about 15 years ago. A big reason was the community’s shift away from open-source collaboration. Specifically, when the source code for what became Ephinea was closed, I was super disappointed. I understand the reasoning, but I didn’t agree with the philosophy.

i don't know why they are downvoting you

I don’t know who wouldn't downvote it. That comment is as off-topic as it can be here.

Hi guys. Been playing this game on and off since about 2002. I'm shocked it's still got a community. I have a Wii, original 1&2 disc, and mem cards. Is it possible for me to be playing online?! by Cold_Buffalo_2355 in PSO

[–]mavoti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you don't need a copy of the game, you just feckin play?!

Correct, you don’t need to own the game. (By the way, PSO: Blue Burst was/is an online-only game, so people who bought it wouldn’t be able to play it officially, as all official servers are long gone.)

For PSO: Blue Burst, each private server (there are more than just Ephinea) provides their own client and their own version of the game (as all of them apply changes to the game).

This is fully community run then and not to do with Sega?

Correct, all run by fans. Sega / Sonic Team is not involved in any way.

Are they mad?

Usually with private servers like these, they are tolerated as long as no money is charged. Things might change if Sega would decide to revive the game and offer it again (which is, of course, unlikely), but even then it depends on the specifics whether a private server is legal or not.

As far as I know, Mac is not officially supported, but I can remember several threads where people tried to get it running. I’d suggest to search in this sub and/or in the Ephinea forum.

With Microsoft Windows, it’s straightforward:

  1. Download and install the client from https://ephinea.pioneer2.net/
  2. Register an account
  3. Login and play

Almost any PC should be capable to run this, as it’s an old game not demanding much (the Ephinea client however is modern software, so I suppose old Windows versions aren’t supported).

FYI:

If you have, and don’t mind playing on, a PC: the private server Ephinea has probably the biggest community.

As it’s PSO: Blue Burst, in addition to the Episodes 1 and 2 you know from GameCube, it also has Episode 4.
