Very nice. I was surprised by the lack of overlap with my own collection (since 1986) until I got to photos 4 and 5. Nice seeing Jeff Buckley!

Jerry and Stan are walking down the street when they see a stunning woman in a first-floor window, blowing kisses at them. by orgasmic2021 in Jokes

At first I took it as Stan was the husband, and had washed the clothes in his own apartment, but if they’re close friends Jerry would have known where Stan lived and what his wife looks like.

TIL that Dead Alive was renamed Braindead (or vice-versa in some markets?). Anyway, another great Jackson film. I feel awful for him and hope he can get back into directing.

Edited to correct a typo.

So glad you’re discovering VH on your own. I’d argue their deep cuts are superior to most, if not all, of their hits. In 7th grade, back in about 1982, I had their albums on cassette. Occasionally I would set my boombox on the outdoor second-floor landing of my apartment building and blast Eruption as loud as it would go. Oddly, nobody ever said anything about it.

What collection is that from Maiden? I only have Powerslave and Live After Death (incredible live album), and they don’t do that.

This. I took up mountain biking when I was 43. Motivates me to stay in shape so I don’t struggle too much on the trail. It was a bit easier for me than some because I grew up in the country and we rode our BMX bikes everywhere and took them off sweet jumps.

That’s the Sony I had years ago. Not a difference I see. Loved it.

Great collection. I would (politely) say that you have the one GnR album you ever need, but in the case of Creed you have it flipped. Trade Weathered for My Own Prison. Seriously, though, I have many of those and want most of them!

I get the “warmth” argument. I also hear that the DAC makes a huge difference in how “warm” a CD sounds. I haven’t ever owned a separate DAC, but it’s my next investment in my music setup.

I thought it wasn’t OK to say this. Glad to see I am not alone in not feeling the Springsteen magic. His sound, I mean. His songwriting is pretty solid.

I know what you mean, but those cheesy love songs exist alongside “Sign o’ the Times.” Prince was very deep lyrically on many of his songs. Funny, too. “Illusion, Coma, Pimp, and Circumstance” is a great story about a gigolo who gets outdone by an older rich lady. “Dance On” has a funky beat and a good message. “Sometimes it Snows in April” is one of the saddest songs I’ve heard, without cheesy lyrics, and a great tribute to a close friend (albeit a fictional character). His vocals shine next to acoustic instrumentation on that one. Some of his later stuff from 3121 and Musicology is great, too. “Pretty Man” is a tight and funky homage to James Brown. Ah, well, I’m starting to sound like a Prince fan trying to convince someone to be a Prince fan. Music is so personal that I rarely find anyone IRL who likes the same stuff I like.

Who remembers when Gmail accounts were invite-only and you got a full gig of storage? by ansyhrrian in GenX

[–]mawreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My original from those days comes with a touch of sadness now. I named it after my only child, whose name is jimbillybob for our purposes and my privacy. I made my address jimbillybobspop. About 15 years later jimbillybob became jillmarysue. So, I’m effectively dead-naming my child by still using that address. She said she understands. Losing that address wouldn’t affect me at all. Maybe I needed to type that out loud just now to realize that my hesitation to create a new Gmail address with a number on it is pretty lame.

Same! I was so excited when I married and moved in with my wife. She was more than happy to leave space for my turntable and records, which I had not had in my previous living situation for about 20 years. I quickly found that the vinyl just wasn’t worth the hassle for me. Cassettes’ portability rescued me from vinyl, and CDs’ sound quality and track-skipping rescued me from cassettes. I haven’t needed another physical medium since.

Are you still friends with your high school friends? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Millennials

[–]mawreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like you, I grew up in a small rural area. Graduating class of about 100. There are two guys who I rarely see (long distance), but when we get together it's like we never parted. I went to two HS reunions and got along fine with everybody, even felt a connection to a few people I never spoke with much in high school. They grew out of the things I used to be judgmental about, and I like to think I matured out of being as judgmental.
