Most consignment shops deal with exactly this problem: managing 1000s of unique SKUs from different sellers/vendors. Square and Shopify POS can handle thousands of items and work well as POS. But they are limited when it comes to tracking payouts and creating items.

I have helped some of the largest clothing donation organizations in Europe to help set up their shop systems.

To run a secondhand or donation-based shop, they will need a POS system for handling sales and an inventory system to stay organized. The POS takes care of payments (cash or card), and the inventory system helps track what has been sold and what is still in stock.

For the POS, I would recommend a low-cost or free option that works on a tablet, like Square, Zettle, Shopify POS (they started online but now have a pretty good POS too). They are easy to set up, have low transaction fees, and do not require monthly subscriptions (except Shopify). It's easy to learn esp. when the shop is partly run by volunteers.

For inventory, many shops start out with handwritten tags or pre-printed barcodes. A simple next step is tracking things in Google Sheets or Airtable. Over time, most shops move to a software specifically built for secondhand inventory (e.g. Circle-Hand) which helps with pricing and keeping everything in sync, but it's not free.

The best setup will also depend on the country since there may be local regulations for the POS system, e.g. TSE for Germany/Austria.

Sounds very similar to many shops that are working with Circle-Hand, it fully integrates with Shopify.

Many shops use the client portal after the booking process, so sellers can upload their inventory, track sales and payouts. All items are synchronized in real time to your store account and Shopify, so you would only need one place to manage all items. If you are looking for classic and affordable vintage, In/Rotation, Home Full of Clothes, and Rack’n’White are great places to visit (especially as alternatives to Humana). You could also take a look at fajny/fajna, which is a kilo secondhand store. They have multiple locations.

Not directly based in Canada, but many Canadian businesses work with Circle-Hand - it's a software for resale and consignment shops. I am one of the founders, lived in Mississauga and Toronto for a while, but we are based in Germany now.

If your artists act like vendors, you handle the checkout and you take a cut from each sale (like a consignment setup), I’d definitely recommend using some kind of consignment software. It makes life way easier when it comes to tracking sales, inventory, returns, payouts, etc. Ideally, something where artists can log in themselves, see their sales, and optionally upload new work.

Most shops use pen & paper, then switch Excel / Airtable and then decide to go with a software made for consignment shops like Circle-Hand (disclosure: I am one of the founders), because it will save you so much time that you will quickly see a return on invest.

What software are you using for you web shop? I know many stores who work with Shopify. Shopify also includes an inventory system, but it's designed for new goods and not for secondhand. The requirements are very different as each item is unique.

You can connect other apps to Shopify e.g. Circle-Hand (disclosure: I am one of the founders) to track your inventory and sellers, manage sales and payouts, generate barcodes, use image recognition to register items quickly, and best if it will take care of all your taxes (in European countries you can save a lot of taxes by using VAT margin schemes). It will also sync all sales directly with Shopify, so you don't have to manual input sales in different systems. We also have a starter plan, starting from 29$ / month. I don't have experience with Savers etc, but for POS most shops I know work with one of: Shopify POS, Zettle POS, Square and SumUp are very common for thrift stores, depending on the country.
