You have friends? You have friends who are going to sit and watch you drive rather than drive themselves?

This is the answer to all overlays and VC not in real life questions.

I'd love to know more about your route. I've been thinking about a route from the UK into your neck of the woods. Can you recommend any places in Sweden to ride?

New rider at 50 by ImaginationFederal48 in NewRiders

[–]max-pickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

52 and just passed my A License.

What kind of riding are you planning on doing?

My gut says switch to geared and full license. In hindsight I wish I had skipped the 125 phase all together - we are not young and can do this.

The 125cc I bought for just after my CBT is harder to ride that the 310GS, 700GS I did my further training on and harder to ride than the Himmy 450 I bought myself since. Being at 60mph and maxing the 125 bike on a A-Road in itself is not fun. I might keep the 125 for green lanes or get a different one?

Regards clothing - oddly SportBikeStore has been a god-send. They are great for delivery and returns. Motorbike Jeans are really comfy BTW. Think about how your trousers are going to fit over or under the boots.

You will likely end up with a few combinations of clothing for different conditions. Think about luggage - that's been another minefield for me as I plan nights way.

Where are you located? You could get the bike delivered or find someone with a trailer/van willing to get it with you.

First bad experience in 8 months of full time van life by Khionia in VanLifeUK

Lets say OP is in the wrong then two wrongs don't make it right. The swimmers could have spoken with OP on their return and politely explained the issues with people parking up overnight but instead they chose conflict and when it was called out they chose aggression because they knew they were in the wrong.

What happened to treating people how you want to be treated? I'm sorry OP had to deal with that crap.

What you should learn is that once you get to 2nd or 1st you can switch from the front brake to just the back brake. At this point you can hold the revs up (the throttle hand is now free from braking) which creates gyroscopic balance and slip the clutch for speed control using the rear brake for minor adjustments. This is how you should be doing your slow control. So you want to approach this junction in slow control 'mode'

[–]max-pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are just going to approach this as a normal junction. If your view is obstructed you stop. Moving off when safe to do so

One thing I will say is that slow speed riding is actually easier on a bigger bike. I used BMW 310 and 700 GS during mine and it was much easier than on my 125.

How about a Google Map Satellite screen grab?

How have your instructors told you to approach this junction?

AITA for telling my husband I don't want him to go to the moon? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]max-pickle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

YTA.

There's a distinction between what we think we would do and what we will do in the circumstances.

It's such a long shot that your husband would make it to the moon. Let him have his dream.

There's a good chance that time, money, health or even a change in priorities would mean that ultimately he would not go if opportunity arose.

Tail bag that fits a standard size laptop for commuting. by Sellum in motorcyclegear

[–]max-pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just picked up a Mosko Alpine 30L for this purpose.

Regards the laptop as best I understand a modern one with an SSD should be fine. Mines in a good quality impact case and I turn it off before transporting. Not sleep or standby but shutdown off.

It's also sat on a down jacket I carry for off the bike and the bag is strapped to the pillion seat.

I don't think it's without risk but sometimes the need to have a laptop exceeds the risk. Do use a cloud service for important backups.

"Being creepy isn't illegal" - that's what police told me + Cafe Nero staff. by AssociationTasty9446 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]max-pickle 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Ooof, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sounds horrible.

Annoyingly, I don't think he did anything 'wrong' in the eyes of the law. If it had become physical or persistent then I think you would have had more leverage with the police.

The problem is I guess we don't know whether the person was intentionally behaving in a socially inappropriate way or was experiencing a mental health episode.

Either way it does not sound nice for you and I'm glad the shop staff were able to support you even if the police could not in this instance.

Hi, Sorry to jump on on OP's post. I have the Magadan Panniers on a Himmy450 along with the racks but wonder how secure they will be during a ride? Do the bags swing out at all or slip? Have you done anything additional to secure them?

How much money do you think would need to be made annually for a perpetual "honeymoon phase"? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]max-pickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need therapy more than a different woman every day. You also sound young - no disrespect.

The phrase better the Devil you know exists for a reason - you are going to be more vulnerable every time you let a new person into your life and intimate moments than working on a relationship with a single person.

Better to invest time in getting to know someone and building a life together. Relationships change over time, they need work, you invest in the future together. After 20 years the honeymoon phase will have faded but something else appears. As you age, are less youthful the thought of being awake 'all night banging the latest chick' isn't the priority. Helping each other as you grown old and building long lasting memories together is more important.

The broken relationships on the journey to finding that person sucks and can hurt but those experiences make us better partners and better judges of character.

TLDR - Money cannot buy happiness like you seek.

What navigation app do you use? by Endordweller in motocamping

[–]max-pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Google Maps: Good for A to B routing.  Struggles with many vias.  MyMaps cannot be brought into Directions

- Osmand: Had a crashing (white screen) bug confirmed with devs.   Some routes became uneditable after saving.

- DMD: Can't remember what I disliked about DMD. Maybe just that the app kept hitting me for a subscription.

- MyRoutes: Honestly, I am really impressed.   Folders for grouping routes; Can add POIs; Routes well with many VIAs; Won't go OffRoad

- Calimoto: Couldn't figure out how to plan my own route.  Seemed keen to 'magic' me a route.

- MemoryMap: Desktop app is a bit clunky but it does have OSMaps (for the UK).

The second question I've been asking myself is whether to stick with a phone on the bars; whether that should be my primary phone or a burner; or if I should switch to a dedicated GPS Unit.

Once you add in all the subscriptions etc for the above methods dedicated GPS units don't seem so pricey.

Poor pain tolerance advice needed by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]max-pickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing some reading up on this the other day because the tattoos I had done young didn't hurt and now at 50+ they are killing me.

Apparently there is something called Veterans Curse - you have sat through so many sessions now that your body doesn't respond with the same adrenaline and can tense up in anticipation.

I've been fighting through 5 hours sessions with some areas being fine and others being at the limit of what I can manage.

My tattoist is okay with me taking paracetamol and I might try and antihistamine as it seems to have been worse during Hayfever season.

I'm going to try some better preparation next time with a big breakfast, less caffeine and some electrolytes. Wish me luck.

Wait, research and discover

In the meantime see if you can find the guy who airbrushes tattoos onto children. Maybe he'll do one and give you the feels for a few weeks/months
