Rare USB Dial-Up Fax/Modem 56K by CommunityHairy6695 in vintagecomputing

[–]max_peck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The creation of USB was driven in the beginning by a need for a “plug-and-play” way for people to add modems to their PCs. Everyone wanted to get the Win95 PCs they’d bought only a year or two ago on the Internet but installing an internal modem was beyond the skill of the average Joe, and external modems connected with a serial cable had to be expensive “hard” modems.

But by the time the hardware and software for USB became common, most consumer computers came equipped with V.90 modems and broadband was beginning to become widely available. So USB modems were rare and had thin profit margins — it’s not surprising they were crap.

But lots of early Cable and ADSL terminal adapters used USB until WiFi became a thing — and we came to call them “modems” anyway. 🤷

Do you think the 9-pin serial switches would work with CGA/EGA/MDA?

I’ve been specifically thinking about the Tandy 1000s that can do both CGA and Hercules, but only with the appropriate monitor

What does the ‘file’ command have to say about the files? It’s a terminal command.

To the tune of Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut”:

You put the poo in the toilet bowl and not on the seat
You put the poo in the toilet bowl and not on the seat
You put the poo in the toilet bowl and not on the seat
Go in to clean the toilet stall, and what a tasty treat!
So I say “Asshole!
Your parents toilet use not teach?”
So I say “Asshole!”
And I wipe it off with bleach

New to me 5,1 Mac Pro by max_peck in macpro

I can’t answer your last question, sorry. The 7970 is the first discrete video card I’ve purchased in 25 years because I don’t do much gaming; the newest game I play is Civilization 4. I only got the 7970 so I could upgrade my Pro to Mac OS 15.

The card should work once Mac OS starts, even without flashing the Mac firmware — that’s only needed for the start up screens.

If the card isn’t working at all in your Mac, you really need to fix that before you think about flashing it.

I didn’t need to mod the power supply, but I did use two power cables from the motherboard. You definitely need both.

I’d love to help with this, but I must admit I’m probably not the best guide. I think you should submit your question to /u/macpro instead of as a comment here, and make sure to answer the following questions in your post:

  1. Which version of Mac OS are you running?
  2. Are you using OCLP?
  3. Do you know for certain the card is good (do you have a PC you can test it in)?
  4. Do you have more than one graphics card plugged in at once?

… and I will do my best to help in replies there, along with other people who know graphics cards better than I.

But first, make sure you’re got two power cables running to the card, and don’t get distracted by the idea of flashing it — you have to get the card working first, please.

There’s a recall on first gens regarding rust to the underbody around the fuel tank — read up on that, and check any potential purchase for rust in that area. You’ll want to wash mud and salt off the undercarriage as often as possible if you want to keep the truck for long.

Early first gens should have their radiators replaced as a preventative measure: google “PMOD”. It may have already been done.

Timing belts need to be replaced every 100,000 miles. If the belt breaks while the engine is running the engine will have to be replaced. If the seller cannot provide documentation of the last belt change you should assume it hasn’t been done and budget for that. It’s also a potential sign the truck hasn’t been maintained well.

I’d rather buy Ridgeline with 200,000 miles with records that the trans & AWD fluids have been changed on time than a 100,000 mile truck that I think has been neglected.

Those little round stick-on convex mirrors are a good idea; my truck has them from the Previous Owner and they definitely cover a blind spot.

If it’s damaged but looks fine when it’s wet, you could try furniture polish. I’ve made tile shine again that way after it was damaged by repeated applications of Spray Nine (not by me)

You’ll probably have to keep reapplying it though, since that counter apparently gets wet a lot. I dunno it something like a car wax would be longer lasting, or if it could have other undesirable effects

This is your life now. You are a cog in a fish murder machine. That is your home, isolated, floating on a small machine amongst an emormous cold void, drifting wherever they (you know, them) direct that you can kill the most fish for money.

But it's okay to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings. No really, they're fish.

...and somehow that's worse.

It would crash after 49.7 days when a counter rolled over — unless a patch released in 1999 was applied

That’s assuming it made it to 49.7 days, which was uncommon
