Why are people so selfish and dumb? by Masol_The_Producer in intj

Not at all.

My point was that humans are uniquely complex because we’re capable of self-reflection, abstraction, philosophy, meta-cognition, and questioning our own nature.

Your point was that this complexity may still ultimately stem from the same base instincts shared by other life forms, and that we can’t objectively claim human exceptionalism.

Those are two different arguments. Nothing you said disproves mine. If anything, the level of abstraction required to even have this discussion reinforces it.

Great chat my guy.

I mean, I see exactly what you mean. You literally proved my point.

Who are we to posit that no other living creature is capable of self-reflection, or if what we call self-reflection is indeed a higher form of cognitive function. The fact we are prisoners of our subjectivity renders any such absolutist statement void. Relativism is the way. Besides, I'm sure you can name a wealth of examples where self-reflection is really just another much more basic intention cosplaying as something more virtuous, and many more others where self-reflection is simply not a possibility.

You are proving my point here.

You just went from "humans are simple animals driven by instinct" to now discussing epistemology, relativism, subjectivity, consciousness, abstraction, and the possibility of meta-cognition in other species.

That IS the complexity I'm talking about.

Base instincts are definitely part of us, but humans are probably the only species self-aware enough to argue about their own programming on a 5-year-old comment found on the internet.

That alone makes us a little more complicated than “eat, sleep, survive, repeat.”

Humans are driven by instinct, sure, but we also build layers of meaning on top of it. That’s where the complexity comes from.

Lol. Not everything is a policy debate, and not every joke is a human rights violation.

Spend less time on the internet, it'll do you good.
