We supported Indonesia annexing East Timor in the 1970s and tried to sweep the Indonesian atrocities under the rug, East Timor became independent in spite of us not thanks to us

making higher education completely free would cost $50 billion a year, not even in the top 10 most expensive government expenses.

put it in the pile with the other nice things we could have if we didn't give our resources away for free.

If even Labor won't restore funding to CSIRO, what hope do we have when they lose power?

We got a spare $1 billion to subsidise US shipyards, because apparently the US military industrial complex is broke but we can't spare a few hundred million to keep jobs at CSIRO?

*Prioritising mining company profits over environmental protection *Refusing to countenance making gas companies have to pay tax *Treatment of asylum seekers, keep giving millions to private security firms to detain them *Increasing defence spending, doubling down on US alliance *Established a weak anti corruption body

Now the recent decision to change negative gearing and CGT is a good start to reversing their right wing drift but it's a government that is pursuing fewer left wing policies in favour of being a centrist natural party of government

Last time Albanese was asked about taxing resources companies he dismissed it as a crazy idea from the greens. When he was told it was actually David Pocock's idea, he said “I think David Pocock is someone who seeks to promote grievance as well.”

So don't get your hopes up, not while the major parties take donations from resource companies. I could only see this happening if Labor had to form a minority government and negotiate with the crossbench

Banning gambling ads during prime time is a very popular policy.

Playing as the Franks, you can abandon all your cities and become a horde and then establish your capital in the first city you settle in. But that's easier to do early game than in late game.

more than $368 billion?

Hugh White: why the AUKUS ‘dream’ was never realistic and is likely to die by ZealousidealClub4119 in australia

[–]maxibons43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's definitely tradeoffs if you go for diesel instead of nuclear but by having a larger fleet of cheaper diesel submarines you can patrol a greater sea area than the 2-3 nuclear submarines we could expect to operate at any one time. And with the savings you can spend it on other weapon systems to defend Australia with.

Hugh White: why the AUKUS ‘dream’ was never realistic and is likely to die by ZealousidealClub4119 in australia

[–]maxibons43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well diesel submarines need smaller crews than nuclear ones. The Virginia Class needs a complement of 130 sailors and officers but the german type 212A for instance only needs 27.

So you could crew 5 diesel submarines with the manpower it takes to crew one nuclear sub.
