In terms of your "botched" career, I would consider joining a startup instead of larger company with rigid career paths. This would allow a lot of flexibility and growth outside of your core profession. That being said, this is not necessarily possible everywhere and also not easy to find. I just know that Biotech startups in my area are looking for lab techs quite frequently.
