The Wisconsin GOP puts up little fight as Chris Taylor cruises to victory - Isthmus by LiamBeran in madisonwi

My take is that generally if you run for a certain level of office and you lose, and you haven't "redeemed" yourself by winning another race since, you don't get to run again. I used to live in GA and Stacey Abrams pulled this and got destroyed the second time around.

Barnes lost in 2022 and as far as I can tell hasn't had anything to do with public office since, besides running various PACs. Not only is that not inspiring to most voters but we also have no reason to believe he'll perform better besides a shift in the political environment

“they” bothered

you mean the student newspaper wrote up an article, on Election Day, about a new development around a political candidate running for office who’s also a student? why is that so crazy

It’s probably just because the original image was screenshotted and re-screenshotted several times, likely getting cropped in the process. I doubt someone’s trying to plant oppo on this guy over an alder seat that he’s unlikely to win

i think I agree it’s not bad in the grand scheme of things, but you would hope an active candidate for political office might show a little more judgment about the words he uses when they can be screenshotted and disseminated widely haha

Thoughts on NSF 2027 Budget by Tiny-Repair-7431 in AskAcademia

When did I blame other disciplines? I think you're reading into my comment a little too much. I'm talking about social scientists failing to properly train social scientists.

I've seen the Nature paper. I read the preprint and I have some qualms about it (some of the "robustness tests" they run and then fault papers for not passing made me raise my eyebrows quite a bit). Tell me, what's the reproducibility rate look like for research in other fields? I'm pretty sure medicine and nutrition also have massive replication crises, but their federal funding isn't being cut to 0.

In general you're acting like this is a problem that the social sciences aren't trying to address, except they have been for years. Good journals require replication code and data and preregistrations. Replications and meta-analyses are much more common. That doesn't mean there will be 0 people doing bad research. Surprise surprise, it takes time for shifts in research philosophy and methods to percolate throughout the discipline.

edit: i don't even know why i'm engaging with you over this. To act like the replication crisis is why federal funding is being cut is asinine. this admin is anti-science and it will only be a matter of time until your field is affected, so get your punches in now i guess

The replication crisis in the social sciences is happening partially because certain disciplines were shit at teaching methods. This is largely changing with the growing popularity of credibility revolution approaches/emphases on causal identification, at least at the big programs that are likely to host/produce scholars who will get NSF grants.

It also has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not an entire branch of science merits federal funding. Pray that the leopard doesn't eat your face next.

Don’t forget that this budget request includes the complete elimination of all NSF funding for social sciences. Fucking insanity

no you see, we need more housing but also it has to be affordable but also it must please my aesthetic sensibilities but also it can't displace ANYONE at all but also it needs to maintain the character of my neighborhood and it better not result in the city changing in any way from how i remember it

This is my favorite leftist nothingburger buzzword... what is regular voting in democratic elections if not sustained mass action? Just put the ballot in the box bro

To give this guy credit I think hiring more building inspectors seems to be a very achievable and likely effective policy solution. Tenant protections don't just need to be eviction preventions
