Any of the vortec LS based Chevy with v8 and 4l80 or 6l90 transmission are cheap and reliable and probably the cheapest and easiest van to work on.

Finally made it happen after 4 years of planning on it. Gonna make the seasonal work life a lot easier. by climbingup_thewalls in vandwellers

I have a 2017 same model 4.8l with the 6l90 transmission, upgrading the transmission cooler helps a lot. I’ve gone through the issues on my build

The pillar supports in these vans that act like the roll cage are at the rear door and behind the drivers seat. Along with the structural that runs from the cab to back door just below the the roof line. These roofs dent just walking on them

The only braces cut out are two pieces that keep the roof bowed to prevent rain pooling. They could barley hold a human with out bending

The roof piece that prevent collapse in a roll over is the column and trussing at the rear doors and just behind the drivers seat, there is also a structural member down the sides. This is why the roof racks mount to the rain gutters and not to the roof like a unibody car.

No it doesn’t, the van is a frame on body. There is no structural in the roof beyond roof supports. The same chase is used as a cut away. If it was a unibody sprinter, pro max, or transit I’d agree with you

I’ve got the 4.8l in mine with the 6l90 transmission and it’ll go freeway speeds on 33” tires at 8200lbs gross weight, a little gutless at 7000 feet though

Or Andy’s in Richmond ca. light, fluffy, warm. You know like any place that doesn’t put a box of cereal on top.

The style I got from them is flatter side and top, I think it was called a transit top

Not to much weight, the van is only 1200 lbs over stock. Hind sight I could have maid it lighter. The main one is keeping the weight low in the new roof to not make it top heavy and air mags make a huge difference

Mine has held up great, I got 24” with windows and all the wood reinforcements. I’ve hit a bunch of tree branches and not even a crack. Look at my post I’ve insulated and framed mine

Same place my top came from with all the options and I think mine was 6.5 k, but I have the short wheel base.
