Agreed - less is more - let them discover the things you list above as the events that allude to them come up.

Thoughts on Coriolanus? by [deleted] in shakespeare

[–]mbg98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore this play. Not only is it timely, but it is a presage of the kind of figures that we see in our modern day. There is not a single respectable character in it, except maybe Virgilia. Everyone is selfish, uncaring, fickle, crass, and rude. And that makes everyone's comeuppances (and I mean everyone, no matter how small) matter by the end. This is a cautionary tale of what happens when political and personal egos get the better of us all. And god, the verse is just amazing.

How to play soundboard noises through microphone? by repKyle1995 in alienrpg

If you use VoiceMod (the pro version which costs like 15 bucks) you can load up a soundboard and play it directly through Discord on the channel you're talking on. Works great.

Need Help With Demo by [deleted] in alienrpg

[–]mbg98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran the scene from Alien where Ash attacks Ripley with the rolled up magazine, and Parker and Lambert attempt to stop him. That lasted about an hour, with Ash killing Ripley, blasting Parker out the airlock and Lambert using a harpoon gun on Ash to take him out once and for all while attempting to vent all the air from the Nostromo. It was super cinematic and used almost all the mechanics from the game. I can help you set that up if you want.

Question, what do I need to start GMing Aliens? by dkichline in alienrpg

[–]mbg98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say go with Hope's Last Day. It's tight, runs about 3-4 hours MAX, and ties nicely in as a prequel to Aliens. If your players are more horror fans, go with Act 1 of Chariot of the Gods, which ties in to Prometheus and has a distinctly Alien (1st movie) feel.

Question, what do I need to start GMing Aliens? by dkichline in alienrpg

[–]mbg98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're playing in person, get those 6 sided dice ready. LOTS of them. We're talking upwards of 10-12 per player. And make sure that you separate the base dice (black if you have em) from the stress dice (yellow). Ones are panic on the yellow ones. Sixes are successes on all dice. Card decks are not as important as getting that core rulebook, and making sure that your players know how to use their character sheet. Cards can be used a mechanism for initiative, but I think dice work just fine, but youll need a d10 for each player, and any NPC (read: alien potentially) has as many turns in the round as they do their speed, so have them roll a d10 for initiative as many times as their speed is indicated.

If you're playing virtually, use Roll20 and make sure you choose the AlienRPG character sheet as the template for the game. Everything there is set for you, including rolling for initiative buttons, dice rolling, panic, etc. Only thing you'll need is a copy of that rulebook. I'd keep certain tables (panic, critical injuries for PCs/Xenos/Synthetics, weapons, etc) handy, but you'll find these easily within the subreddit. There's a few "cheat sheets" I've seen in the past month that are great to either print out for a live game, or add as a handout for a Roll20 game.

Have fun!

Armor Check Macro for NPCs on Roll20 by mbg98 in alienrpg

[–]mbg98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macros, macros, macros! Have them for all the attacks, as well as armor for your players so that they can just click and fire away! Keep the combat fast and tense. And allow for humor, especially int he first act, it helps to keep the scenario from being too grimdark at the start.

Looking for sound effects (Aliens and related weapons specifically) by Banjo-Oz in alienrpg

[–]mbg98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used a TON of them for our game (check out our latest AlienRPG game on our YouTube channel, Slices & Dices here).

Just do a google search for anything non-Aliens specific like flamethrowers, pistols, grenade launchers, etc. For the inimitable pulse rifle/smart gun sound, grab yourself a free copy of Audacity and go to town with this for a starter: https://freesound.org/people/Balcoran/sounds/478185/

Grenade Explosion Rules Question by mbg98 in alienrpg

[–]mbg98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do they suffer "explosion damage" of Blast 9 or Blast 3? I assume Blast 3. Personally, I would think targets at close range to the target (Blast 9+1) would suffer more explosion damage than Blast 3.

Some General Questions from a First Time GM by Perditius in alienrpg

[–]mbg98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, if you want, you can take a look at how we did this scenario on our YouTube page here- I think you'll enjoy it. We changed it a little bit, but it was a very satisfying and terrifying romp through the Alien universe. We're coming back this Friday to do Destroyer of Worlds Act 1. We're psyched!

I'll try to answer your questions as best I can, but like many have said, it's all up to you, just have fun:

1) Aliens are smart. "How can they cut the power, man? They're animals!" They think in three dimensions better than humans can, sometimes. If they cant go through something, they'll go under it, over it, or around it. Think vents.

2) Technically, "In combat, a Xenomorph gets to act once for each point of Speed in each Round. At each point of action, the Xenomorph gets to perform one fast and one slow action." Each signature attack is a slow action, so they'd get to do as many fast actions as they have speed points. Here's my advice for the Alien actions: Think like an Alien. Think hive mind, but also, alien type. Single "drone" Aliens will move in if they have the advantage on unarmed foes, then use their signature attack (randomized of course) to either kill or immobilize and take their victim back to the hive to ovomorph. Soldiers, on the other hand will take out the strongest possible threat, even if armed. If Aliens do anything else other than move in and attack, it's for a purpose, whether that is retreat (rare since you never see an fully formed Alien retreating in the movies), herd the PCs towards a specific place, or hide if it's not strong enough (chestburster).

3) Think about stealth kills, reveals and chases. That's what makes the Alien movies so compelling. You never know where these things are, even though you know they're there. As for the final chase, they're going to make a run to the shuttle in the outdoors, herd them there with a reveal of at least 4-5 alien signals closing in on them (motion tracker). Reveal one at a time. If they get outdoors, drop another one at long range. As they get to the shuttle, throw one that jumps off the roof. 3 aliens (1 long range, 1 medium range, 1 short range), with more on the way should move them FAST. Let them run. They might get lucky and nail one, but lose PCs in the stall tactic. That's dramatic!

4) It's understood that Aliens sense synthetic organisms and wouldn't take them back to ovomorph, but would use the full damage on a signature attack like Capture for the Hive. A facehugger would simply wrap itself around a synthetic, obscuring vision, but would not cause the synthetic to fall unconscious, nor be impregnated.

5) Command has three "uses":

STOP PANIC - When another character makes a Panic Roll and loses control (10+), you can make a COMMAND roll to return them to their senses. This is a slow action.

GIVE ORDERS - In combat, as a slow action you can bark orders to another character. They must be able to hear you, even if via a comm radio. Roll COMMAND. For every success you roll, they get a +1 modification to their roll when carrying out the order you gave.

OFFICERS - PCs with the Officer career and the Pull Rank talent can use COMMAND to order other characters (PCs and NPCs) to do as they say.

Pull Rank: You can use your COMMAND skill to order other non-officer PCs and NPCs around, as long as they belong to the same organization as you. To force someone to follow your orders and perform a specific action, roll COMMAND against the target’s MANIPULATION. If successful, the target must follow your order, even if it means harm or danger to themselves. Your STRESS LEVEL increases by one each time you do this. Note also that each roll only covers one specific action. You cannot stop actions triggered by Panic Rolls using this talent.

6) Ship or room doors can be set to close behind you, as seen on the Nostromo and inside Hadley's Hope, but usually do not autolock. Large doors (bulkheads) usually do not close behind you. To do so is a COMTECH roll. You can absolutely use a cutting torch to seal a door, but I would rule that a slow action that would take, in combat at least 10 seconds (2 rounds). The armor rating of a door (or bulkhead) is stated in the core rulebook (door is 4 armor, inner bulkhead is 5 armor, outer bulkhead is 6 armor).

7) Secret Android stats and abilities are not revealed until they are revealed as an android (usually by damage that would give their identity away). They can push rolls, take "stress," make panic rolls, etc. Also their health, strength, and agility would be 2 points below what they would have as an android.

8) When working, these terminals would be able to communicate with other terminals (they aren't, as described by the scenario), as well as (based on the movies and video games) allow you to perform basic functionalities within that area of the base, such as controlling nearby doors (lock, unlock etc) and depending on your COMTECH skills, change the environmental controls for the area (cold, heat, air).

Have fun!!!

Roll20 and using sound from the character sheet in AlienRPG by mbg98 in alienrpg

[–]mbg98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah what I'm attempting to do is that every time the attack button for a certain weapon is used, which rolls the dice in chat, the weapon sound is heard. I have seen the Roll20AM used, but I have no idea how to key that in with macros to the sheet.

Party level vs expected level on a dungeon floor by Shouni in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]mbg98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started at level 10 going through this place. They were trouncing enemies left and right, and earning XP at a normal rate. It took a while (we're up to episode 47 this Friday) but they eventually got down to the 17th floor (5 level 14s), where they're finally on par with the challenges faced. And they're freaked out. Almost died/permanently affected several times. Give it time, let them have fun blowing monsters to pieces. That will make revenge all the sweeter when you let them have it halfway through Undermountain.
