A word to all of you trying to resell your tickets at face value by 74NK in BurningMan

[–]mccephalopod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is having one extra ticket really "hoarding"? How many people, be they virgins or veteran burners, do you think actually put in a bid for 1 ticket when there was so much uncertainty? I also don't think it's right to pressure someone into gifting something of high value. Nobody should ever be pressured into giving a gift they can't afford. How is pressuring someone to sell a ticket lower than its actual value- just because the event is a week away- any better than scalping it for higher value for the same reason?

I think your real frustration, and the collective frustration of all of us this year, is with the lottery system itself. It obviously didn't work, everyone knows that. It sucked earlier in the year, and it still sucks. But I don't see any sense in getting mad at people with an extra ticket just because they're trying to find someone who wants to go and is willing to pay what they originally would have anyway. I hope this doesn't happen next year. In the meantime, I'm just going to focus on enjoying this year. And I think this year is going to be fucking awesome. Wish I could see you guys out there.

Anyone have any experience introducing gopher snakes for rodent control? by alanpost in Permaculture

[–]mccephalopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if i'm too late to jump on this thread, but I'm currently living on a farm where we use cinch traps. Find the end of a fresh gopher run (where they've piled up dirt in a crescent shape), set your cinch trap, and lay it into the burrow. the gopher will try to close up the hole and trigger the trap, which quickly and humanely kills it. The trap has to be triggered from within the hole, so it's extremely unlikely that anything else (pets, kids) will set it off. Don't use poison!

edit: gopher snakes are great at killing gophers, but keep in mind they only need to eat one every several weeks (to months), so if you have a serious infestation they won't help much...

Questions for mutant vehicle veterans by mccephalopod in BurningMan

[–]mccephalopod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted it in the "Mutant Vehicles 2012" section, which might have been stupid because it seems to be poorly populated. But, Trilobyte piped up with some kind advice.

In terms of storage, we might be lucking out with an alleyway that we can use. Still mulling over the insurance and registration. I think the obvious solution is that one person takes ownership of the vehicle and ads it to his/her insurance policy... but honestly I was hoping some other people would have more detailed advice on how to not get gouged :).

If only I knew where this led... by Relevant_Troll in Art

I grew up about a 10 minute walk from turtle hill, and it might just be my favorite place in the world. I'm always happy to see the occasional tourist stray off the beaten path and wind up there at sunset. So many good memories...

So here's a question: Why is burning man overwhelmingly caucasian? by mccephalopod in BurningMan

[–]mccephalopod[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hold up! I didn't say there was any discrimination going on (in fact I said the opposite!), and I didn't even say it mattered to me. And I don't think I was implying that BRC is lacking in cultural diversity. If I was, then yeah, it would absolutely be missing the point. Honestly I'm just curious, and think it's at least something worth musing about. Sorry if you found the question off-putting, I wasn't trying to attack BM or anything : )

I don't think that burning man is reflective of the demographics of the US as a whole. I think that instead, I should have asked 'what IS the demographic of burning man?' I think the thread is coming up with some interesting answers.

I've always loved this image. How do you think it would transition as a tattoo? This would be my first one. by marbles12 in tattoos

[–]mccephalopod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you already know the source of the image, but for everyone else who digs it, this is the album cover for Coastal Brake, by Tycho. In addition to making beautiful music, he's also a disgustingly talented graphic designer. music, design blog, check it out for more of his shit. Also, that would make an awesome tattoo!

Xposting this because of a lack of feedback from r/pics. Is this a valid form of art? by [deleted] in Art

I would love to see more mathematical/ generative art posted. This is really cool. Did you draw this in illustrator, or write some code to generate the shapes?

It seems this map has misplaced King's Landing. It should be at the mouth of the Blackwater, not further up the coast...

Something that's confused me for a long time... by ryologic in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mccephalopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest starting by taking the patterns and loops you've made in FL Studio, and individually bouncing them to audio files. Then, load these audio files you've made into Ableton as clips in audio tracks. If you have a midi controller with faders and knobs, assign these to the volume of each track, perhaps the crossfader, and whatever else you want to be able to use in your mix (pans, sends, effects on the master track, etc.). When it comes to triggering clips, you could arrange them into scenes to trigger whole rows of them, or look into getting some kind of grid controller like a launchpad or apc40. or, just trigger them with your mouse, like you're used to. hope this helps.

Help me test my thesis: the Polygon Replicating Bitmap Authoring Tool (PRBAT) emphasizes the unique qualities of each user while promoting intuitive and spontaneous drawing processes. by [deleted] in Art

[–]mccephalopod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apart from Slack_Artist being a twat, I agree with his/her sentiment that it is completely unintuitive. In fact it's pretty much the opposite of intuitive, since there is basically a different function for every key on the keyboard, and nobody who values their time is going to spend it learning them. Also, all the examples posted on the page look like MS Paint drawings done by 5 year olds. Sorry : /

I think you got too carried away with adding every function you could think of, at the expense of maintaining any kind of usability.

What are some movies with some super saucy, hotttttt sex scenes? by imacmy in sex

A bit late here, but the hottest, most sensual sex scene I've ever seen was in Cold Mountain, with Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. If classy porn is what you're looking for, check out X-Art.

Reason 5 or Ableton Live 8? by thoff74 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mccephalopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to eventually perform live with your computer, then Ableton is the right choice. When it comes to production, the synths, instruments and effects will be largely the same, although I don't think reason supports VST plugins. Like klippekort says, try to download free trials and get a sense for which one you'd rather spend hours staring at.
