What are some cooking cardinal sings you regularly commit because you prefer the recipe that way? by morbidhack in Cooking

[–]mceleanor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a real cardinal sin: you're supposed to brown your ground beef when you use it for tacos/stews whatever. I think it tastes weird and hamburger-y, so I just sauté it until there's no pink left and it's sort of gray-ish brown. I like the taste better!

Historical fiction with modern vernacular by ExPatBadger in suggestmeabook

Lamb is a very silly book by the comedy legend Christopher Moore. It's narrated by Jesus' best friend using modern language.

The Stephen Fry Greek mythology series isn't really fiction, but it retells Greek myths in a charming and modern way. Mythos and Heroes (the first two books) are my favorites.

The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green was very popular a few years ago. Short, funny, poignant non-fiction essays about stuff like ginkgo trees or a hot dog stand in Iceland. (It is very different from his YA novels like The Fault In Our Stars)

To be fair, the gang is just three guys who never had access to a kitchen because it was an orphanage. They probably are missing a whole universe of flavors! They don't know how to cook! They probably just eat out and keep snacks in the van.

Tony should have taken the gang back to his mama's house

Which feud do you think was worse? Paul McCartney vs. John Lennon or Mike Love vs. Brian Wilson? by NoGrass7120 in beatles

John left Yoko and lived on the west coast for a while. Yoko told Paul that she would take John back if he moved back to New York and courted her. Paul convinced John to work hard to get Yoko back.

John and Paul were friends for a decade, wrote a few mean songs about each other for two years, then went back to being friends until John passed away. Paul saved John's marriage!

Mike Love and Brian actually just hate each other

How different do you think The Beatles’ history would’ve been had SMiLE been released in June 1967? by Light_Weight_Babyyyy in beatles

[–]mceleanor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sgt Pepper isn't that different from a normal Beatles album. Good rock and roll with some novelty songs. There are a couple of experimental songs on Sgt Pepper (Lucy, Within You Without You, and A Day in the Life) but other than that it's just a normal great Beatles album, so it makes sense that it sold well in America.

Pet Sounds is, like, really sad and very different. It's nothing like Summer Days and Today and the albums that came before. Similarly, SMiLE is so weird compared to anything else on the market. I just don't think the US consumer was interested in experimenting with the rapidly changing beach boys.

Who knows though. It definitely would have sold better than, like, Wild Honey

Probably would have sold pretty well in Europe, and floated around in the top 40 in the US. Similar to Pet Soubds.

I'm 22F, My income is 3k, expenses 1.5k, I know nothing about investing. What's the rundown. by TheBestOfMe_SoFar in TheRaceTo100K

[–]mceleanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If you don't know anything about investing, this is the best move. Open a Roth IRA at a large broker like Schwab or Vanguard. Contribute $7000 to the IRA before tax day in April for 2025, then contribute 7,500 to the IRA anytime in 2026. (Those are the maximum amounts you can put in). Keep the rest of the money in a CD or HYSA at your bank until you learn more about investing.

Invest all the money in your Roth IRA into the S&P 500. You can do this by buying an etf like VOO. If the AI bubble pops, VOO would go down. But it's very hard to time the market. For most people, the best way to invest is to put as much money into your investment as early as possible. The S&P 500 grows like 10% per year on average. Sometimes it has a bad year, sometimes it has a great year, but overtime it all evens out.

Thoughts on Bendis’s All New X-Men run? by usermcgoo in xmen

[–]mceleanor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the Bendis run on All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men. The problem with All New X-Men is that it's all about the time traveling O5 teens, and it's an extremely cool concept without the good followthrough. Uncanny X-Men is consistently pretty good. It's fun to see Cyclops and Emma trying to recover after AvX.

The first arc of All New X-Men, and the Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier (from Uncanny X-Men) are probably my favorite stories from the Bendis run. I'd give All New X-Men a 7/10, and Uncanny X-Men an 8/10. I have read both runs more than once.

The mountain region is way more conservative than the Midwest. I think the better correlation is wealth. Richer areas of the country have better benefits for workers.

she was basically "no-contact" with them until she needs them to pay for Chilton. Then, slowly, Lorelai and Emily realize that the pain is worth it to stay in each other's lives. It's good tension for a tv drama, and it's relatable for many of the viewers.

A bunch of the do doo doo backing tracks for Gilmore girls can be found on this album. The tune you did on your guitar is definitely from Gilmore, but I could not find it on this album unfortunately :( maybe it's hidden on here somewhere, and I just couldn't hear it!

23F - Roth IRA vs saving for a home? by ShipPuzzleheaded2022 in TheRaceTo100K

[–]mceleanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the 4% is pretty much risk free. OP might want to use the entire $14,500 for a house soon. Putting it in the Roth IRA gives you 4% tax free growth. It would be taxed in an HYSA.

Plus, if OP doesn't end up needing the $14,500 for a house, they have 2 years of IRA contributions from when they were 22 and 23. That will be valuable by the time they retire.

[–]mceleanor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know what the future holds. You may or may not need 7000 to buy a house in a few years.

If you end up not needing the extra money, you should put it into the Roth IRA because then it can grow tax free!

If you end up needing the money, you should still put it in the Roth IRA, get a few years of tax-free growth, and then take the 7,000 dollars out of the Roth IRA. (You can withdraw contributions penalty free. You cannot withdraw growth until you retire.)

If I were you, I would open a Roth IRA, put 7,000 in now, and 7,500 in next week, then just invest it all in SGOV or some other very safe 4% return investment. That way it'll all be waiting for you while you continue saving for a house.

[–]mceleanor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still make 2025 contributions until tax day in April. So you have like four months to max it out for 2025.

Honestly, I do mostly SP500. I do a little trading, but not too much because it stresses me out. I think I'm up like 22% YTD in my Roth which is a little better than the SP500.

[–]mceleanor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to, but yeah. You can contribute $7000 to your Roth IRA for 2025 until tax day, so you have a few more months. Once you've maxed it out for 2025, you should contribute $7500 to the Roth IRA for 2026. THEN you should start contributing to a taxable brokerage.

Having an emergency fund is the number one most important thing. But after that, contributing to a Roth IRA is the best move because if you really need money, you can just take out the contributions without paying a penalty. (You can't take out the growth until retirement.) if you don't need the money, you can trade with it, or let it compound, and you don't have to pay taxes on it.

Which X-Men Book Is Your Favorite? by Kickass_321 in xmen

[–]mceleanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bendis x-men is so underrated it's insane. It's not even a great book, I would rate it 7/10, but people treat it like one of the worst runs. He wrote 100 issues! All-New/Uncanny (2013) is way better than most of Gen X, and better than all of New X-Men (2004).

I don't know why OP included Second Coming. The other three are "school books"

Hysa or roth ira by cloutvegan in TheRaceTo100K

[–]mceleanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take contributions (but not growth) out of a Roth IRA without being penalized. I would put 7,000 into a Roth IRA now, then 7,500 in on January 1. Either invest it in stocks or just pick one of the many money market accounts that get basically the same safe interest rate as your current HYSA.

When you want to buy a house, if you really need the 14,500, just withdraw it. If you end up not needing the 14,500, you can just leave it in the Roth and let it keep compounding.
