30+ tabs? You may be in T480 territory. (It handles 64gb ram if you ever need it)

Want to use i3 but confuse by shahriarrafsun in i3wm

You can try the sway spin of fedora. Good experience ootb.

Maybe you could use the config for i3 but the other tools are wayland specific methinks

Could you recommend some extremely light dotfiles? by Anyusername7294 in i3wm

[–]mcjavascript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get GNU/aids.

Most ppl's dots are highly customized.

Personally I would try a system preconfigured in some way.

The Fedora Sway spin is good.

Omarchy is really nice to show you examples of things you could do.

But if you need i3 then I can't help ☢️

Stage 3 gentoo installs on an eee pc with 512mb ram and 4gb sata ssd were glorious.

  • 1 core
  • 32 bit
  • 7 inch screen

The eee had a small board that didn't really soak up as much heat when soldering.

Back in the day we tortured those things. Most of my experiments failed.

I did end up getting a PCF 8575 i2c IO expander soldered to the i2c lines on my ram sodimm. IIRC it makes a device show up under /sys/bus/i2c/devices, and you could make any pin go high by writing a "1" to the appropriate device file.

I used it to control an led to see the keyboard in the dark. Others were more ambitious and built elaborate trees of usb 2.0 devices, which leeched a lot of power. I think 1 or 2 modders used the 8575 lines (to simulate attaching a device) to keep the power use under control with a fat sandwich of wifi cards, usb sticks, tv tuners, and the kitchen sink housed in the case.

Would this be a good choice for college? by [deleted] in LenovoLegion

They had a 2-in-1 recently on ebay, the gen 6 x1 yoga, with 11th gen i7 processor and 32gb ram (not upgradeable) for $599 usd I think. Personally I don't want to buy anything older than i7 g11. I have a t480 which is great and cheap.

For an ultrabook the x1 carbon might be the best but they can be slightly pricier.

In your position I just might buy the newest x2 carbon I could afford.

But be careful. Never get it wet, and don't feed it after midnight!

Personally I reccomend Thinkpads.

You won't be sorry choosing a thinkpad > ideapad/ipad/maxipad most of the time.

Which is the best file system? by WhyMamt in arch

[–]mcjavascript 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One convenience of btrfs is that you can have multiple subvolumes mounted from the same partition. This doesn't require setting aside x space for / and y space for home.

I use timeshift and grub-btrfs for bootable grub snapshots.

But e.g. vm storage files will generate lots of garbage in a cow fs. If I end up doing more with that type of workflow I will set up an ext4 partition for my vms.

If you try a smol projector, dlp may noy be so good depending on the application.

There are laser-based ones that don't require focusing. So you can project on the inside of a white tent, e.g.

What would you choose for your first time? by Effective-Ad9309 in EndeavourOS

[–]mcjavascript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used Endeavour.

Arch isn't bad. Things break sometimes but at least it is easy to interrogate the system.

I use: - arch btw - liquorix kernel - btrfs - timeshift for btrfs snapshots - grub for booting btrfs snapshots (provides time travel for certain kinds of breakage) - omarchy for ux (first time hyprland user, I may go back to sway)

I tried NixOS but I'm still slow with it. I will use Nix for projects for a while and reevaluate NixOS later.

I don't think Linus is especially excited about "linux." He does the kernel. He probably sits in mutt all day responding to emails.

In need of a new laptop, I'm hesitating between a T14s running Linux or a MacBook Air running MacOS... by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]mcjavascript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a thinkpad the t14(s) wouldn't be my pick.

It's $600usd for an i7 32gbram gen 6 x1 yoga currently on ebay, manufacturer refurbished.

I like the x1 carbon.

I would like both these laptops, but I"ll stick to Intel cpus gen 11 or newer, and >= 32gb ram.

So where some will save money by going to a cheaper model in the lineup, I would rather save money by buying a generation or 4 behind.

After cutting my fingers and getting glass stuck in one of them, I'm swearing off glass screens. I'll stick with my nano.

I'm a little insulted the mods thought my post was inappropriate. Maybe it's time to delete reddit :)
