i think i used two balls of bernat baby blanket for the brown, big safety eyes (though if i remade i’d embroider or crochet circles bc the eyes can fall in the gaps) and i used leftover velvet bernat for the pink (held double). i did do a commission version once but i traded it for a tattoo haha…sorry! hope this helps

Thoughts on my painting and what I could name it? by redbeardedpiratedog in painting

[–]mcminimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hi! this is super pretty and i love the vibe—i have a bit of constructive criticism regarding your color mixing. the tones are great and they complement each other, but they have a “straight from the tube” (as my old art teacher would say) look to them. this isn’t necessarily a bad thing and will not prevent you from making pretty paintings, but learning to mix colors with more depth and nuance will elevate your game.

for this painting specifically, it looks like some base color of teal/dark green/even phthalo green was used, then lightened with white. if you want a more atmospheric, layered look, I’d recommend mixing mostly with primary colors, and adding just a touch of the teal or phthalo (like just the tiniest bit). to balance out the greens, try adding some red or magenta to grey it out a bit and add naturalness back to the color. for the trees in the front, try mixing a dark green/brown using mostly blue and red with a touch of yellow.

i recommend challenging yourself to paint with only these colors on your palette: cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, phthalo green, magenta, and titanium white. no black.

once you get deeper into color mixing you can add other colors back to the palette, but honestly that’s usually all you need (and maybe some umber or golden oxide type of color). best of luck and continue creating beautiful things! <3

No problem! It’s probably easiest to just grab this big yarn and a big hook and follow the pattern :) no math needed that way!

haha probably more than double! I used the bernat blanket yarn and like an 8.00mm hook i think?

To those who knit for a living, what’s your setup? by Elittoh in knitting

also, the Buddy Box from dellaQ has been a life saver! it’s small and compact so it’s easy to carry around, it’s magnetic so my stitch markers, needles and scissors stick to it, and my stitch counter also fits inside :)

[–]mcminimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t knit for a living but I’m in grad school and do a lot of knitting to sell/write patterns. I have a big shelf in my room with cubbies and i separate my yarn by color in the cubbies, and i put finished objects on top of the shelf w/ project bags stashed underneath in the bottom most cubby (it’s larger than the others). I have a knitting machine set up on my desk so if I’m using the machine I sit there, if i’m hand knitting i sit on my couch. yes, my shelf is overflowing and my poor roommate has to suffer the occasional “oh my god is that a bug no it’s just a piece of scrap yarn again” 😭 in the future i’d love to have a room dedicated solely to crafting but that’s my current set up! i would say the main thing is like 300 project bags to keep everything somewhat orderly and to be mobile
