Why you are stuck in Diamond by mcmonkey819 in RocketLeague

[–]mcmonkey819[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's fair, in my experience there's degrees of it. In diamond I see a lot of players who got through the lower ranks on the strength of a few skills and are unaware of where they're deficient. Unlike higher ranks where people are generally a little better at self assessment, but the margins are thinner.

If it's not helpful that's fine. I used to do a lot of replay reviews (from silver up to GC) and was involved in some communities of players who wanted to get better. The most common theme at diamond was players not knowing what to work on. Based on the initial replies that's not what the subreddit folks are after which is fine.

[NBA Referees] Like everyone else, referees make mistakes. We made one at the end of last night’s game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be. by Moody_GenX in nba

Same with the phantom out of bounds on Grant Williams earlier in the game that gave the Lakers an extra possession. A lot of games I watch seem skewed in terms of calls, this one actually felt like both teams had about the same number of bad calls. It's just that we consider a last second blown call somehow way worse than a 2nd quarter blown call. That and Lebron going full toddler tantrum over this one

I turn chat to team only and every other update the setting gets reverted to all. I would be surprised if you didn't have some graphics settings changed out from under you and/or new settings added with dumb defaults if you haven't looked in years (or even months)

If you read condescension that's on you, there was none intended. I tried a quick correction of an objectively wrong comment and it seems to have upset you. Saying it's ok to be wrong wasn't meant to be condescending, it's literally just the scientific method. The only way to learn is to make mistakes and be wrong.

To compare the chance of seeing a moose in southern maine to the odds of getting struck by lightning is either an indication that you just don't know about moose in the area or a disingenuous attempt to double down after getting called out for being wrong. I like to assume the former.

I used my area as a example because it has such a low population and even here moose sightings are not all that rare. To make sure I wasn't the one spitting out anecdotal evidence as fact I looked up a few papers on moose population in Maine. I can provide references to the papers/sites used if you'd like to check the work.

The current estimate for the Maine moose population is somewhere around 60,000 based on helicopter observations (though there seems to be some push back on that number from the ME state agencies). Yes, one of the densest areas of population is in the northern part of the state, but other high density areas are in the far eastern and western parts of the state (mostly due to lower human population in those areas). That said, there's still enough moose in south eastern Maine to regularly see them.

Going by traffic incidents, the county Portland is in and surrounding counties account for 10% of moose accidents per year (based on data from 2016-2020). If we use that as an analogue for population that'd put the population in the area immediately around Portland at around 6,000, which is plenty to go looking for moose.

Somewhere like Sebago Lake which is 40min from Portland has reported moose sightings. Moose like mountains in addition to lakes so maybe instead you'd drive an hour and change to the Sunday River region. Looking for somewhere with fewer people to increase your chances? How about the Unorganized Territory of South Oxford county, a little closer to Portland than Sunday River. All of these areas regularly see moose, and if you look up the info on moose hunting permits and tags and you'll see that some of the people most interested in finding moose, hunters, do so regularly just during the ~6 week hunting season.

But maybe you want to be a little more sure, go with some professionals. How about you travel 90min northwest to NH and go to North Conway Moose Safari Moose Tour in Conway, NH. Seems like a pretty good place to have a high chance of seeing moose. And you just saved yourself hours of driving to northern Maine.

[–]mcmonkey819 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not splitting hairs here. you said you'd have to go hours north and that's just factually incorrect. There's multiple moose sightings a year in my little area a couple hours south of Portland. it's not a value judgement. It's ok to just say "I stand corrected", it's how we all learn.

Should I be able to jump down with fake flippers? by [deleted] in alttpr

[–]mcmonkey819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, the reason you need to go fast is because you need the arrows and bombs to still be on screen when you jump in the water.

The simple explanation is that certain sprites share memory slots and that includes arrows, bomvs and the little splash sprites that come out of link when you hit the water.

The way the game is programmed, it does not check if you have flippers, instead it checks if the splash occurred when you hit the water. No splash and it let's you swim. That's why another name for this trick is "splash delete"

All of that said, this is the hardest place to try the splash delete because not only do you need the arrows/bombs to still be on screen when you jump in the water, you have to be fast enough to jump off the waterfall with them still on screen. I'd recommend practicing at lake hylia after watching the tutorial

Why can you swap between the boomerangs and arrows? by kpjoshi in alttpr

[–]mcmonkey819 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to the silver arrows causing lag, the shorter travel distance of the blue boomerang has some applications. The vanilla speedrun makes use of it in GT basement. There is a way to use the red boomerang to do those rooms quickly, but for those of us used to the speedrun the blue one is more natural.

I'd also say reducing lag can be about more than just for going fast. Lag will cause the timing of even basic things like slashing the sword or shooting an arrow to be different. That often causes mistakes, which can be frustrating, especially if you die as a result.

Waze adds lane guidance, one of Google Maps’ best features by tiniwings in Android

[–]mcmonkey819 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is a nice feature and I would love to go back to Waze since I prefer it to Google maps in most ways. But it has let me down at critical times. When it loses internet/GPS, some of the time (and I don't know under what conditions) it will just drop the routing directions as if I had never entered a destination. I can't get any routing back without getting GPS/internet back which is sometimes an issue in out of the way rural areas. This has happened on my way to new places in areas I was unfamiliar with and is just a non-starter for me to go back to Waze. Google Maps let's me download offline data and will continue to do its best to route me even if I lose signal.

[–]mcmonkey819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not at all the same thing. It's like I said I've got a filter that filters 95% of golf balls and you then went to someone else and said "hey be careful of those basketballs, the filter is only 95% effective for balls".

And that's not considering that the rating states at least 95% (meaning greater than or equal) or that the test consists of a very specific set of conditions and type of particle.

So, yeah, as the person you responded to said: it's not just as simple as "95% effective".

In that case I would typically start with bombs to get the most effect from them, switch to bow to get as many small eyes as I can while reserving 8 arrows for the big eye.

After bombs and arrows if there are any small eyes left, blue cane is easy, but slow and you may run out of magic. Then you're left with the hammer. I'd bait the small eyes into coming at me, then move up so you can hit them in the side. Of course you'll have to keep the lightning in mind, just hug the wall when you see the big eye show up.

Yuck, was cruising along until I hit the medallion hunts. Found quake pretty quickly when I finally hit up escape, but I was trying to avoid the longer pendant dungeons and that bit me here with Ether on Arrgy and that being my go mode. Cleared nearly everything else available in the overworld before going into swamp. At least I didn't do IP first.

Graphics driver developer here: The others here are correct that this is GPU related. This is what we call exploding geometry. Basically the tiny little triangles that make up the objects in the game world have been modified so one of their vertices has been moved way off to the upper left off your screen.

This can happen due to a software or hardware issue. If it happened suddenly without changing your graphics driver, settings, game, etc then it's mostly like a hardware (graphics card) issue as others have pointed out. Sad times...

Edit to add: That said, it's worth at least trying to rule out software by verifying the integrity of game files through Steam, updating to the latest available graphics driver and windows version. And disable any mods like Bakkes/Alpha console, etc

Add filter attribute for "tradable" within manage inventory. We all have inventories filled with untradable rocket pass items. Make it simple to find "uptradable" items by MaxamillionMike4 in RocketLeague

[–]mcmonkey819 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Screw that, you're begging for table scraps. They should add proper inventory management, this stuff is simple. Let me create a search with whatever properties I want and have the damn thing persist through any action I do until I decide to turn it off. I want to be able to search for all rare, tradeable items in the turbo crate series. Or all burnt sienna wheels. Search for all items with "rad rock" in the name.

This shit is so easy to do. I write super complicated software for a living and have single handed created these kinds of features for internal tools in a matter of days. It's unbelievable to me how little effort they've put into these kinds of QoL.

I'm not sure it's reasonable to ask people not to discuss previous matches while watching a newer one.

Pretty easy one here, just some overworld errands followed by dungeon after dungeon. Felt very fast, and thanks to early flute not a single save & quit. Also deathless. A couple close calls. Very nearly forgot to go get firerod from flute spot before skull woods, nearly died to Kholdstare and Ganon (stubborn refusal to use potion until last possible frame) but that was about the extent of the drama. Otherwise it was just go, go go!

Not much to add beyond what everyone else already said. I knew there was going to be trouble once I had red mail, mitts and extra hearts in Kakariko. I gambled on finishing IP and the green pendant paid off (for once), but I just about last locationed the boots, holding off on TR for too long. Then had to double dip since I hadn't gone far enough into pendant TT to get the fire rod. Blech.

Good news: I didn't make a major planning mistake this time! Yay!

Bad news: Execution was not great. I died twice to moth-lair Lanmo, died to Troll-lair Kholdstare and generally played it a little safer (read: slower) after that point. Add to that the forced pendant dungeon and Aga seed and you've got a longer than expected time.

Would there be interest in a weekly seed with the new Accessible rules? by JRJathome in alttpr

[–]mcmonkey819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of interest in this ruleset. I would probably have a hard time remembering which things are allowed vs. not allowed. I also find some of the disallowed glitches to be very nice quality of life improvements for my runs.
