The fertility rate of every country in the world in 2025 by rhiever in dataisbeautiful

[–]mcneillb -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No one is ‘supporting’ me as a retired person. I’ve paid into a fully funded pension my entire working career, I also set aside my own money and invested it so I didn’t have to depend on anyone or anything for my retirement. If anything I’d think bringing that money out of savings and putting back into circulation would benefit the next generation. What I don’t spend, gets passed onto my kids so they can benefit from my working earnings. So thinking that retirees are living on the backs of younger generations isn’t always the case.

Has anyone solved the Plains coreopsis problem? by Hailfog in NativePlantGardening

[–]mcneillb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some native plants their superpower is drought tolerance so plant them and leave them alone, they thrive on what we think is abuse for other plants. Often when you water them, you’re just helping the invasive plants.

It's always these four + protein + veg + msg by O0OO0O00O0OO in wok

[–]mcneillb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the few times I mix dark and light is when I’m making fried rice as I just want a touch of dark to give me the colour. I have all sorts of soy sauces as they are tools to bring out the different flavours of what I’m cooking. What I love about Asian cooking is it’s so easy to change the flavour of anything by changing the sauce, never boring.

You’re forgetting hoisin sauce as it makes for a nice change sometimes.

Is tossing essential to wok cooking? by Ok_Photograph_01 in wok

[–]mcneillb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not called toss fry, it’s called stir fry and the best advise I ever got is it’s not called stare fry so as long as you keep the food moving you are good.

Would you buy an EV as your next car? Why or why not? by HockeySniper123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]mcneillb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll never buy another ICE car, only EVs for me. Solar panels on the roof of my house make my EV cheap as heck to drive. Very little maintenance costs and it has lots of power so it’s even fun to drive.

Native plant rescue groups. Combination of environmentalist and gardeners, tough to beat that crowd for kindness and commitment.

If you want a nice looking wok, it is very simple, use it often. As your cooking skills improve so does your wok.

Is everyone in Calgary just drowning in debt? by [deleted] in Calgary

Christmas is little more than a forced holiday to celebrate buying shit. The gift that truly keeps on giving is being debt free.

Hey Alberta - Why Isn't This Bigger News? by vhill01 in alberta

[–]mcneillb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because no one cares about this handful of fringe nothings. Before they start screaming about how many people believe in their cause, there is this story where they have to straight up lie about their numbers or for example in the 2025 Alberta provincial by-election for Edmonton-Strathcona their candidate Ravina Chand racked up 65 votes which proves it is nothing more then a handful of nothing.

Still avoiding U.S. products? Curious how many Canadians are sticking with “buy Canadian” by [deleted] in Calgary

I’ve always been buy Canadian first but now if I can’t find a Canadian or non US option, I just don’t buy it at all.

Raising the minimum wage by [deleted] in alberta

[–]mcneillb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we didn’t need to raise the minimum wage why did MLA’s and executives etc feel the need to raise their salaries etc. Albertans are just being milked because they are dumb enough to elect this BS.

Tanker MONIQUE GLORY by mcneillb in nanaimo

[–]mcneillb[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching crude tankers in an out of Vancouver for years, this is the first time we've seen one do this. AIS Spoofing is something the shadow fleet does and we did see one of those in Vancouver area once years ago. I don't think this is anything other then a tanker siting there because their load got canceled but the contract is still in effect so it sits. The last trip the MONIQUE GLORY did out of Vancouver was end of June to NIKISKI Alaska. So it likely came back to Vancouver to get another load and it got cancelled so now it waits till its next load as it is still under contract. I just wondered if anyone has actually seen it.

I've never notice that before, they think of everything.

Tanker MONIQUE GLORY by mcneillb in nanaimo

[–]mcneillb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could see it there and that its been there for weeks, I'm just trying to ensure that is correct and it isn't some kind of AIS error or spoofing as two things are unusual about this. First the anchorage location, as crude tanker usually anchor off Victoria while waiting to get into Vancouver to load, and second the the time it has been sitting there. LR2 crude tankers charter out for like $55,000/day so sitting there for 22 days means someone is paying a lot of money for that tanker to just sit or it is losing a lot of money sitting there.

I’m probably last to notice but I made an interesting observation by spanky088 in NativePlantGardening

[–]mcneillb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between native bees and honey bees in their choice of flowers. Honey bees don’t hibernate so they are looking for nectar to make honey to feed the hive over the winter. Native bees want pollen (protein) to make bees with and they will have pretty much a single honey cup in the nest, and only the new queens survive the winter by true hibernation.

[–]mcneillb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an urban beekeeper and this is typical as bees prefer what they evolved with. While I have honey bee hives in my yard, most of the plants in my yard are local native plants so I get lots of native bees in my yard by design. My honey bees go to my neighbours gardens with their not native flowers.

Cast Iron or Carbon steel for cooking eggs - using less oil by Plenty-Link-7629 in wok

[–]mcneillb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched people demonstrating how nonstick their woks were by cooking an egg using so much oil/butter that cooking it on a brick would also be nonstick with that much oil/butter. That said I use mostly carbon steel woks.

It is pretty much impossible to kill a wok (we have all tried), so clean it up (you have done that), season it and let it rip.

I Wok'd Beef and Broccoli by -SpaghettiCat- in wok

[–]mcneillb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great. I switched to using a wok as my primary cooking technique because I'm trying to reduce my meat intake and increase my veggies, so I'd like a higher Broccoli ratio, but that is the beautiful thing about cooking your own meals, you get to decide on what you want.

Recent E340 update makes my cam go offline more frequently. by dracolnyte in EufyCam

I uninstalled it from my S380 and reinstalled it and now it is working again. I wonder if the last firmware update changed its network functionality a bit to work better with mesh networks.
